One nasty thing they do is have you do closing work at $2 before your shift is over without opportunity for tips so you make even less per hour.
That would be breaking federal law. Tipped employees are
not allowed to earn than $7.25 per hour, employers are simply allowed to take tips into account to figure out what each employee is actually taking home, while paying a minimum of $2.13 per hour.
For example, a non-tipped employee earning minimum wage and working 40 hours per week would gross $290.00 per week.
A tipped employee earning minimum wage and working 40 hours per week would gross $85.20 per week in wages. That employee would also have to earn at least $204.80 in tips during the week. If a smaller amount of tips were earned, federal law requires the owner to make up the difference in extra wages. So, if that same tipped employee only earned $100 in tips that week, the employer would have to pay the minimum wage of $85.20, plus $104.80 to make up the difference.
