China does not have a national minimum wage; it varies by province according on the cost of living.  It ranges from the equivalent of about $1.25 per hour to $2.50 per hour.

India also has no national minimum wage, and it varies by state according to cost of living.  It ranges from $2.18 per day to $3.40 per day.

Mexico's minimum wage is split into two zones, depending on cost of living.  In Zone A, it is $4.92 per day, in Zone B it is $4.66 per day.

Because the minimum wage (and even "high" wages) in other nations in lower than in the US.  It's just dollars and cents.  Not that that is a moral reason, but it's an economic reality.

That's the federal minimum wage for non-tipped workers.  The federal minimum wage for tipped workers is $2.13/hour (although, if that amount plus tips doesn't at least equal $7.25/hour, extra wages have to be added).

Several states have set different minimum wages, the highest of which is $9.19/hour in Washington state.

  • Thanks for clearing that up, Dolores. I had been told by a friend who lived in the US about that $2.13 figure, and wondered if it was true. I could hardly believe my ears when I heard it, especially since

  • One nasty thing they do is have you do closing work at $2 before your shift is over without opportunity for tips so you make even less per hour.

This shows tipped employee wage state by state. It's crazy most states have no minimum or the minimum is $30 a month.

     :surprised:
May the most holy, most sacred, most adorable,
most incomprehensible and ineffable Name of God

and glorified in Heaven, on earth,

    and by the Sacred Heart

That would be breaking federal law.  Tipped employees are not allowed to earn than $7.25 per hour, employers are simply allowed to take tips into account to figure out what each employee is actually taking home, while paying a minimum of $2.13 per hour.

For example, a non-tipped employee earning minimum wage and working 40 hours per week would gross $290.00 per week.

A tipped employee earning minimum wage and working 40 hours per week would gross $85.20 per week in wages.  That employee would also have to earn at least $204.80 in tips during the week.  If a smaller amount of tips were earned, federal law requires the owner to make up the difference in extra wages.  So, if that same tipped employee only earned $100 in tips that week, the employer would have to pay the minimum wage of $85.20, plus $104.80 to make up the difference.

Yes, the minimum wage in Australia is much higher.  Of course, the exchange rate needs to be considered, but the US dollar and the Australian dollar are close to parity.

As I explained above, however, while the $2.13 per hour figure seems very low at first blush, no one in the United States is permitted to earn less than $7.25 per hour once tips are taken into account.  If an employee is earning less than that, there has been a violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act, and it carries hefty penalties, far beyond merely getting your unpaid wages.
