This!
I doubt it was done on purpose. More like a sign, and also to be expected for someone of her age.
.
This is not my field, but I've heard of many patients who went in for broken ribs (auto accidents and falls) only to find they had a punctured lung.
.
Punctured lung is a whole new level of concern for nurses, like head injury or compound fracture or burst appendix. Very serious condition.
.
A rib fracture can have sharp points that can stick into the lung like a knife.
.
Punctured lung requires attention otherwise the patient could drown in his own blood from internal bleeding.
Even without profuse bleeding, infection can ensue from airborne germs getting in to the wound.
.
To top it off consider this: normally you set a broken bone, then put a cast around it for
6 weeks.
But how can you set a rib -- nothing to hang on to like an arm or a leg, and then how can you put a cast on a rib?
The only cast that would work is a BODY CAST - to keep the shoulders from rotating and the back from bending.
But they don't usually use a body cast for broken ribs, I don't know about THREE broken ribs, though.
.
In any event, they'll probably have a nicer party without her presence..............
They could come up with a few tasteful jokes about it.
You know, to have a little fun at her expense, without being too obvious, of course!

Reminds me of Adam and Eve -- God formed Eve out of one of Adam's ribs, but He was kind enough to use general anesthesia!
.
Furthermore, we can be certain that Adam was not a Black man.
