    Quote
Peter Mandelson said today that the only thing Margaret Thatcher ever told him was that the Irish were “all liars” and not to be trusted.

The Labour former cabinet minister revealed the 1999 exchange as he explained why he did not want to attend the former premier’s funeral service.

“I didn’t feel I knew her well enough” to apply for the tickets offered to peers, he told BBC Radio 4’s Today.

“Although I helped to organise the Labour Party’s opposition to her policies throughout the 1980s, I only ever met her once.

“It was the day I was appointed Northern Ireland secretary and our paths crossed.

“She came up to me and she said, ’I’ve got one thing to say to you, my boy … you can’t trust the Irish, they are all liars’, she said, ’liars, and that’s what you have to remember, so just don’t forget it’.

“With that she waltzed off and that was my only personal exposure to her.”

Lord Mandelson, one of the central architects of New Labour, has criticised the scale of the funeral but accepted the Iron Lady “reframed British politics”.

“I think what she was right to do was to bring home to us the reality that Britain could not afford rampant inflation, that state monopolies needed commercialising, that personal tax rates were too high and that enterprise was too unrewarding,” he said.

“She was also right to argue that deregulation can be a valuable spur to innovation and efficiency and of course she tackled what was then a very disruptive and irresponsible trade union culture.

“But the truth is also that in cutting back the state necessarily, she overlooked what the state can also do successfully.”

  • Anti-Irish sentiment is quite common even among English Trads. Even Patricius, the owner of Ignis Ardens stated I wouldn't know the truth if it kicked me up the backside.

Then in London, the President of the League Kingship Christ stated to me, I would need to get subtitles for Br Columba Maria's talk. He is Irish.

Then you had a Patricia suggest Irish patriots 'supped with the devil'.

  • Similarly, in Italy the northerners and southerners look warily at one another. Like my father used to say, there are no Italian's north of Rome. Lol. I guess you know where I am from!   :incense:

  • Are we sure the story about Margaret Thatcher is even true?  The guy only met her once, and he's on an opposing party and this incendiary comment is the only comment she ever spoke to him?

Well, if Thatcher was correct, then the guy who claims to have met her was
a liar.  But he's the one telling the story.  So if he's a liar, how do we know
that Thatcher told him that?  How do we know that she told him anything?
Or, is he the guy in the puzzle who tells a lie, then the truth, then a lie, then
the truth, and so on, never two lies in a row, etc.?

I've known several Irish who couldn't tell a lie if their life depended on it.

St. Patrick was Irish.  He wasn't a liar, Margaret Thatcher.

Father Fahey was Irish.  His truth may have been painful for the English to
hear, but it was still truth.

Maybe to Margaret Thatcher, something she didn't want to believe, to her,
she thought (subjectively!) must be a lie, and no doubt she heard a lot of
things from the Irish she didn't want to believe.

    So there!

We ought to ask +W about this.  This is his "cup of tea." No pun intended.

I don't know, but two things make sense to me.

1.She probably did say it, giving  the snotty English brashness and arrogance.

    2. There are more than their share of Irish liars out there.

The difference is, is that here on the other side of the pond they're called "politicians".

Well, Patricius can kiss my green Irish....rosary.   :really-mad2:

  • And so can that hell-bound heretic Margaret Thatcher.

  • I'd rather be a liar than a murderer. Erin Go Bragh!
"This principle is most certain: The non-Christian cannot in any way be Pope. The reason for this is that he cannot be head of what he is not a member. Now, he who is not a Christian is not a member of the Church, and a manifest heretic is not a Christian, as is clearly taught by St. Cyprian, St. Athanasius, St. Augustine, St. Jerome, and others. Therefore, the manifest heretic cannot be Pope." -- St. Robert Bellarmine

It wasn't about this issue but I listened to a lecture from him the other day where he was talking about how with modernism and liberalism men lose their minds and sometimes it's women who end up having more strength than men. He said something like she was the best man that England had at the time. He said what a good actress Mrs. Streep was in the movie about her.

I've heard from others she basically ignored funding for areas that would not bring her votes did a lot for the more conservative areas.

  • Hello,

Margaret Thatcher is Rose Kennedy.  She didn't have her brains pulled out of her nose.
