Sanhedrin Appoints High Priest in Preparation for Third Temple

8/30 CORRECTION: While the Nascent Sanhedrin recommended Rabbi Baruch Kahane as the Kohen Gadol, it did not officially appoint him as he made it clear he would be unwilling to accept such an appointment at this time. The Sanhedrin recommended him for the position of “Rosh Kohanim” (head of the priests), a role with Biblical precedent which is often but not always synonymous with that of the High Priest. The court recognized and blessed Rabbi Kahane’s invaluable efforts in the past to advance the issue of reinstating the Temple Service, which include participating in reenactments and establishing a school for educating kohanim.
Breaking Israel News is an enthusiastic advocate of efforts to reinstate the Jєωιѕн Temple and in no way intends to bring negative attention to these efforts. We put a great deal of effort into ensuring our articles are accurate. Nonetheless, misunderstandings do occur and we apologize for any potential discord caused by this article.

A significant step was recently taken towards reinstating the Temple service when the nascent Sanhedrin (https://archive.is/o/D1iW7/https://www.israel365news.com/72147/unesco-temple-mount-vote-cause-global-terror-says-sanhedrin/%23rmUFrMc6yC1EvojA.97) selected Rabbi Baruch Kahane as the next Kohen Gadol (high priest). The selection was made as a precaution for Yom Kippur. If the political conditions should change, allowing the Jews access to the Temple Mount, they will be required by Torah law to bring the sacrifices. Rabbi Kahane is confident that if that should happen, Temple service could begin in less than one week.

Rabbi Kahane is a prominent scholar, knowledgeable in the complicated laws pertaining to the subject of the Temple Service. He is part of the Halacha Berurah Institute, established by Rabbi Avraham Isaac HaCohen Kook (https://archive.is/o/D1iW7/https://www.israel365news.com/47275/israels-first-chief-rabbi-predicted-jews-christians-bring-messiah-biblical-zionism/%235tgFfVTrgZcuyy5d.97), the first Chief Rabbi of Israel, which deals with the elucidation of Jєωιѕн law from its тαℓмυdic sources (Oral Law) and commentaries. He has played a prominent role in all the reenactments of the Temple services performed to date.
This year has already seen much Temple-oriented activity: the Temple Institute has created a registry (https://archive.is/o/D1iW7/https://www.israel365news.com/64632/third-temple-closer-than-ever-search-begins-eligible-Jєωιѕн-priests-Jєωιѕн-world/%23cIRlcHGBJtKsFEkC.97) of kohanim; established a school (https://archive.is/o/D1iW7/https://www.israel365news.com/73287/school-year-begins-for-third-temple-priests/%23lSDZX3FTYLMd6JhF.97) for educating men of the priestly class in the details of the Temple service; and performed reenactments on all the holidays, including the especially significant Passover (https://archive.is/o/D1iW7/https://www.israel365news.com/66704/christian-seders-growing-phenomenon/) sacrifice.

Rabbi Hillel Weiss (https://archive.is/o/D1iW7/https://www.israel365news.com/71637/sanhedrin-declares-jubilee-third-arrival-jews-israel/), spokesman for the nascent Sanhedrin, explained to Breaking Israel News the necessity for choosing a High Priest, even in the absence of a Temple.

Rabbi Hillel Weiss (Facebook)
“We do not need a miraculous occurrence like the sudden appearance of a Temple descending from heaven onto the Temple Mount to make this decision relevant,” explained Rabbi Weiss. “The only obstacle preventing the Temple service today is the political issue. If that should suddenly change, as it very well could, we would be required to begin the Temple service immediately. It is therefore necessary that we have a candidate prepared to fill the role of the High Priest, especially now that we have kohanim prepared to serve in the Temple.”
Rabbi Yisrael Ariel, founder and and head of the Temple Institute, is a member of the Sanhedrin but did not rule in this decision. He told Breaking Israel News that it was necessary for the Sanhedrin to choose a Kohen Gadol.
“This is certainly something we should do now as religious Jews. Choosing a high priest and all of the preparations for the Temple Service are mitzvot (commandments) that are incuмbent upon us according to the Torah,” said Rabbi Ariel.
“It is not a matter of opinion. It is written explicitly in the Torah and, just like any of the other mitzvot written in the Torah, we have to choose a Kohen Gadol, and make all the preparations, regardless of whether there is a Temple standing right now.”
Rabbi Kahane was reluctant to discuss the Sanhedrin’s decision. “This may not be the time to choose a Kohen Gadol. There are no sacrifices required,” he said to Breaking Israel News. However, he added, “That could change overnight. In any case, it is clear that we need to be prepared, to prepare the priests, to have everything ready.”
When asked how long it would take to begin sacrifices if it suddenly became permissible, he considered carefully before answering. “If the government decided to permit it, it would only take a few weeks to make preparations, even to do the Yom Kippur service,” he said.
“The structures can be temporary and prepared almost overnight. The biggest obstacle is educating the kohanim, which we are taking care of already. Once the priests are thoroughly educated, choosing a Kohen Gadol and teaching him what he needs to know for the Yom Kippur service is relatively simple and will take one week. The Temple Service performed by the Kohen Gadol is very demanding, but for an educated kohen, it is not overly difficult to learn to serve as the Kohen Gadol.”

Rabbi Weiss explained the importance of advancing Temple initiatives even when it seems that reinstituting the Temple service is not a matter of urgency.
“There are many Torah laws that are not sacrifices or Temple service but are nonetheless dependant on the Temple and the kohanim. We recently reenacted the Omer Wave offering (https://archive.is/o/D1iW7/https://www.israel365news.com/69749/priests-re-learn-bring-ancient-harvest-bread-offering-temple/%230BKE5zyP7ijffX9I.97), which has ramifications for when Israel can eat the current wheat harvest. In addition, we also reenacted the giving of the shoulder, two cheeks, and stomach of an ox to the priests.”
And this shall be the Kohanim’s due from the people, from them that offer a sacrifice, whether it be ox or sheep, that they shall give unto the Kohen the shoulder, and the two cheeks, and the maw. Deuteronomy 18:3 (https://archive.is/o/D1iW7/https://theisraelbible.com/bible/deuteronomy-18/%23verse-) [WARNING: Hebrew “Bible” fraud (https://archive.is/o/D1iW7/https://judaism.is/hebrew-bible.html)]
“This is not only part of a sacrifice, but is also an issue of kashrut (kosher laws), which we should be doing today,” explained Rabbi Weiss. “Instead, it is treated in a rather shabby, symbolic manner.”
While it seems unlikely that the political climate could shift within a few weeks to the extent necessary for Jews to establish an altar and begin preparing sacrifices on the Mount in time for Yom Kippur, the world can rest assured that as the moment those changes should occur, the Jєωιѕн people are prepared.

The Temple Institute’s program has yet to produce a suitable so a new possibility is being explored: educating non-Jєωιѕн cattle farmers outside of Israel in the laws necessary to identify possible candidates for a Red Heifer. Jєωιѕн sources record similar precedents for the Red Heifer being provided by non-Jews and numerology indicates that the current year is especially auspicious for the return of this Biblical commandment.
Red Heifer candidates in Texas
The Temple Institute launched its Red Heifer program about a decade ago but even in Temple times, an animal that fulfilled the Biblical requirements was exceedingly rare. The Temple Institute has a breeding program in Israel and is investigating the possibility of utilizing genetic science to produce an entirely red calf.
Last month, the Temple Institute was contacted by a cattle farmer in Texas (https://archive.is/o/I42D4/https://www.israel365news.com/194698/exclusive-delegation-of-rabbis-inspect-candidates-for-red-heifer-in-texas/) who informed them that five red calves had been born on his ranch, about two and a half hours travel from Dallas. The Temple Institute charged Rabbi Yitzhak Meir Sabo, a community rabbi in Dallas, Texas with making the initial inspection of the calves. The inspection was thorough, requiring about eight hours.
Chanan Kupietzky traveled to Texas to be part of the delegation sent to inspect the red Angus calves last Monday.
“The farmer was a very sweet man and a devout Christian,” Kupietzky told Israel365 News. “But our story was so unusual that at first, he thought it was part of a scam, that we were trying to trick him out of money or maybe steal the calves.”
Normally, calves are ear-tagged when just a few days old. Coincidentally, these five calves were not tagged, and, also coincidentally, all were female.
“Ear tags make a hole in the ear which is a type of blemish that would disqualify the calf, Kupietzy said. “The farmer explained that because of COVID, the employee who puts in the tags did not come to the farm when these five calves were born.”
The heifer, born from a natural birth, must be entirely red, with no more than two non-red hairs on its body. It must also never have been used for any labor or have been impregnated.
Four of the calves were disqualified. But the fifth had a dark area of hair near its mouth that was unclear whether it would disqualify it for the service.
To be suitable for the ceremony, the heifer must be two years and one day old. Sometimes, a calf that is perfectly red when it is young develops black or white hairs as it grows older, or it may develop a blemish. Sometimes, the colored hairs fall out or disappear. The Temple Institute decided to reinspect the calf at a later date.

The year of the Red Heifer
“I really believe that the red heifer was born this year,” Kupietzy said. He explained that the current Hebrew year is 5781 which, in Hebrew numerology, is תשפא. “That is an acronym for תהיה שנה פרה אדומה (it will be the year of the red heifer).”
Kupietzky explained that as part of the ongoing effort to find a red heifer, he is working with Boneh Israel (https://archive.is/o/I42D4/https://bonehisrael.com/) (build Israel), a Christian organization (https://archive.is/o/I42D4/https://www.facebook.com/BuildIsrael/?ref=py_c), to educate non-Jews to identify possible candidates. Kupietzky explained that the тαℓмυd has a precedent for the red heifer being provided by a non-Jew. The тαℓмυd (Kiddushin 31a) tells the story of the non-Jew named Dama who would not wake his father, Netina, to get to the key under his pillow to retrieve the stones to sell for the breastplate of the High Priest at a price of 600,000 dinars. Dama forfeited this great sum simply so as not to disturb his father’s sleep. He was rewarded the following year by finding in his flock and selling a rare red heifer to the rabbis for the same sum.
“The red heifer is not a korban, a sacrifice,” Kupietzky pointed out. “It is performed outside of the Temple and is considered a tekes, a ceremony. Which is why we are especially looking in Texas for the tekes,” he quipped.
The existence of such a heifer is considered a biological anomaly and very rare. Fortunately, the ritual requires an infinitesimally small quantity of ashes. From the time of Moses, who personally prepared the first heifer, until the destruction of the Temple, only nine red heifers were prepared. Nonetheless, this was sufficient to maintain the ritual purity of the entire nation for almost 2,000 years.
According to Jєωιѕн tradition, there will only be ten red heifers in human history with the tenth heifer ushering in the Messianic era. Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon (Maimonides), the most renowned medieval Jєωιѕн scholar known by the acronym Rambam, wrote in his explanation of the mitzvah that “the tenth red heifer will be accomplished by the king, the Messiah; may he be revealed speedily, Amen, May it be God’s will.”

"This is the statute of the law that the Lord has commanded: Tell the people of Israel to bring you a red heifer without defect, in which there is no blemish, and on which a yoke has never come."
Numbers 19:2 (The Israel Bible™)
"I've grown up with the stories, so I know how rare and valuable the red heifer is," Rabbi Benny "Bentsion" Hershcovich told Breaking Israel News. (https://archive.is/o/MEex8/https://www.breakingisraelnews.com/82957/rare-red-heifer-eligible-third-temple-offering-discovered-mexico/%23z4CKX6id6C8c3igS.97) "I've never seen a red heifer, and I never expected to see one. He says he went to a remote area of the coastal peninsula to buy milk on a dairy farm, but was shocked to see a perfect specimen and vital element of purification of the Third Temple right in front of his eyes – a red heifer calmly chewing its cud under the Baja sun.
The red heifer, one of the most mystifying Torah commandments, is a necessary element for purifying Jews to enable them to do the service in the Temple.

Numbers 19:9 states: "And a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up without the camp in a clean place, and it shall be kept for the congregation of B'nei Yisrael for a water of sprinkling; it is a purification from sin."
Over the course of the approximately 1,000 years the First and Second Temple stood, only nine red heifers were used in preparing the waters used to purify Jews. According to Jєωιѕн tradition, the 10th one will be used by the Messiah.

Though familiar with the concept of the red heifer – or para adumah in Hebrew – Hershcovich felt unqualified to determine for certain whether this particular cow fulfilled the Torah requirements. The laws pertaining to the red heifer are complex and a tiny blemish or a hair of the wrong color can render the cow unfit.
"Regardless of its status, just seeing something that was an integral part of the Temple and Jєωιѕн history was really magnificent," the rabbi said. "I was mesmerized by this simple cow."
