    Black oriental cockroaches are common to Southern California. I recently visited downtown Los Angeles. Not only do they have a flea infestation, which causes typhus, but also Los Angeles has these black oriental cockroaches that can be as long as two inches walking on the streets and sidewalks, especially at nighttime. Females are longer than males. They cannot fly, but they can scamper around quite quickly.

    The dish was loaded with these one-inch wide black cockroaches. I studied entomology in college, so I know these were the wide variety of oriental cockroaches, not the American or Japanese roaches. They were present in the dish as a result of either a) a dirty kitchen at that restaurant, or b) purchased prepared food that had become contaminated by these insect pests. Either way, the kitchen staff should have been aware of this.

    Cockroaches were not on the menu. I have not been back to that hotel or their restaurant. It makes me nauseated to think of it.

    • Correction:

    These Oriental cockroaches were on the average, one inch long. Some were 1 1/4 inch long (most likely the females). I meant to say one inch long, not one inch wide. I accidentally put one in my mouth, and it was difficult to extract due to the spines on its legs. Before I had had a chance to bite down on it, I felt those sharp spines, and I knew what it was.

    These Oriental cockroaches are wider than the American or Japanese cockroaches.

    Los Angeles is a filthy city with these cockroaches reaching two inches long, so I hope to move far away shortly.

    Oh, by the way, this restaurant was located near Santa Ana in Orange County. I did not see any cockroaches on their premises.

    The dish was supposed to be a sausage dish.

    • Truthfully, I am afraid that there is secret cannibalism being perpetrated on us already. it's gotten to the point that I need to know where all my food is sourced and am very careful with restaurants  and eat nothing processed at all. Pepsico has no problem using fetal tissue for taste testing purposes and as far as I know they haven't stopped. What's the purpose? Moral and spiritual, (they'll let us know we have been eating human flesh after we have been totally inculcated)essentially and an increase in autoimmune reactions, but I also think there is genetic manipulation involved-( that's just a theory.)
    I wish I had the time to grow everything and have a few chickens. That would be best.

    • As far as insects go- animals eat insects and according to the jews, we are animals. That is our diet then , no?

    • I'm just as much against cannibalism as the next guy, and I wouldn't want to see the planet de-carbonized, but obtaining protein from insects is not intrinsically evil.  Western civilization (what's left of it, anyway) has a soft taboo against it, but there is nothing problematical about entomophagy.  I've heard some of them don't taste bad at all.   And I seriously doubt they are bad for one's cholesterol or sugar.  John the Baptist ate locusts (the only kosher insect, by the way).

    My big problem with eating insects is that you are also eating their feces.  This can also be a problem with shrimp that haven't been deveined properly.  I became very ill one time after eating shrimp that had been caught fresh from the inlet beside our friends' home.
