  • One of the Trump threads gave me a thought.

I'm curious where other people here stand, from a political theory standpoint, on the issue of freedom of speech.

I personally believe freedom of merely political speech should be allowed, because I think that's a necessary check on the government and government overreach.  *However* I think the government has a vested interest, can, and in many cases should, suppress anti-family or anti-Church speech.

    So for instance.

Scenario A: A person in a Catholic society argues from libertarian principle that ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖ marriage, while sinful, shouldn't be criminalized.

Scenario B: A person in a Catholic society argues from liberal principle that ɧoɱosɛҳųαƖ marriage isn't sinful at all.

I'm inclined to think in Scenario A the State should not suppress the speech, but it could do so in Scenario B.

    What do you guys think.

Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

  • While it's been fun to play this game that we have some sort of freedom for speech, political and religious, that is wrong.

There is no freedom of speech in practice in this country.  And furthermore, there can't even be any freedom of speech in theory.  There is no freedom of speech.

The Left has used this lie for centuries to attack Christianity.  They've just about tied up all loose ends now.  At this point, they've gotten Christians---and especially Catholics---right where they want them.

This wouldn't have happened if Catholics didn't continually sell out in North America for the past 400 years.

Absolutely! How do you like how they used the mantra of “freedom of speech” in the 60’s and 70’s when they wanted to spread pornography and other perversions. When they get the upper hand, watch out, no more freedom of speech for anyone who is to the right of Stalin.
For what doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his own soul? Or what exchange shall a man give for his soul?

Stay on Utopia Freeway to Exit 1984, and take the first left at the bottom of the exit ramp. The sign will read "Erewhon City 10 miles." You'll know you are close when you see the turnoff for Yellow Brick Road. [wink]

  • Error has no rights.

This is a context-free truism, and it suggests a similar one in response: Talk is cheap.

When one has come down from the clouds to terra firma, the question that needs to be asked is, Who decides what constitutes error? Is it you? Is it Pope Francis the Fabulous? Or worse still, is it the US government?

Once you settle upon the correct answer, you might see that it is in the prudential interest of every true Catholic to support any and all initiatives to restrict to the utmost the criminally heavy hand of government. That government long ago made its own decision as to what constitutes Error, and it put us Catholics at the very top of its Naughty list. To choose just one tiny example among many, who is the designated primary villain when an elected or appointed official denounces the "enemies of reproductive freedom"?

The only government that should not be the object of round-the-clock suspicion is a totally Catholic government in a totally Catholic society. When the Archangel Michael arrives to announce the institution of that society, be kind enough to post a notice to that effect here at CathInfo.

In the meantime, awaken to the fact that Error is the first name of the government in the United States and in every nation of the formerly Christian West. Until that state of affairs becomes a thing of the past, all political talk and action ought to prioritize the spiritual and temporal welfare of the Faith and the Faithful. There will be time aplenty to deal with adherents of Error once King Michael sits on the throne.
