More than half of Chicago's Roman Catholic parishes have had a priest accused of sɛҳuąƖly abusing a child working there at some point, according to a study released today that was quickly questioned by the Chicago Archdiocese.
In some cases, multiple priests accused of misconduct worked at the same church, according to the study, conducted by reform groups Voice of the Faithful, African American Advocates for Victims of Clergy sɛҳuąƖ Abuse and the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests.
"In almost 60 percent of the parishes, an accused predator worked there," said Barbara Blaine, president of SNAP.
For example, from 1980 to 1990, 57.7% of Chicago parishes had an accused priest working there, said Bob Kopp, one of the study's researchers and vice president of Chicagoland Voice of the Faithful. Other decades examined in the study had similar percentages of affected parishes, he said.
She is calling for victims to speak up. "Silence protects predators."
"We need to start talking about this and ... not bury it under the carpet," Kopp said.
A spokeswoman for the Archdiocese of Chicago said officials have not seen the study, but told of the report's highlights questioned its conclusions.
"From the description of what we have heard, it appears that the analysis and conclusions are questionable," said Colleen Dolan of the archdiocese in an e-mailed statement. "The priests referred to in the ... report have all been removed and are not in ministry in the Archdiocese of Chicago."
For five years, members of the reform groups combed through The Official Catholic Directory and a database of accused, admitted and convicted priests created by Boston-based bishopaccountability.org. Sixty five of the accusations have been substantiated by the Archdiocese of Chicago. The other 32 accusations came from media reports and lawsuits that have been filed.
In the Chicago area, the group docuмented the assignments of 97 priests, from 1917 to 2009, accused of sɛҳuąƖ abuse.
Those priests were located throughout the area, with a heavy concentration in 13 zip codes in the city and in some near suburbs, according to the study.
The top zip codes included churches in the Bridgeport neighborhood, the West Town neighborhood, the Lincoln Park neighborhood and the Garfield Ridge neighborhood.
Numerous churches, including Saint Leonard Parish in Berwyn, Saint Aloysius Church in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood and Saint Christina Parish in Chicago's Mount Greenwood neighborhood, had multiple accused priests come through in various years, according to the study.
A spokeswoman for the Archdiocese said she had not seen the report and could not comment.

THe Fatima fake out - forget the gospel and don't bother looking in the mirror to see your own faults. Lets worry about the "errors of Russia"
"That
all may be judged who have not believed the truth, but have consented to iniquity"
End time Catholics have consented to evil by abdicating all responsibility to the apostate clergy. I am infallible and you are not allowed to think for yourself - that is the way of Pius IX and his brand of faith that has fostered this train wreck of a Church. Fatima just feeds the fires of irresponsibility by waiting for some sort of magic wand action of all the bishops of the world consecrating Russia to the immaculate heart.
So you want reparations, looks like the courts of Chicago will be working on that matter.
