Damascus, April 12, Interfax - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad sees no future for his country and the entire region without the Christian presence, Hieromonk Stefan (Igumnov), secretary for inter-Christian relations at the Moscow's Patriarchate's Department for External Church Relations, told reporters after a meeting with al-Assad on Tuesday.

“During the talks today, Bashar al-Assad noted that Syria has traditionally been a multi-faith country, and both its future and the future of the Middle East is inconceivable without the Christian presence,” he said.

According to him, al-Assad noted the crucial peacekeeping and humanitarian role of the Russian Orthodox Church in efforts to settle the Middle East crisis, including in providing support for Syrian Christians.

Pray for the conversion of Assad and his family to the Catholic Faith. He seems to be a good man, but we all know that only being good doesn't save your soul. Assad has always protected the 10% Christian minority in Syria from Muslim persecution and attacks. Pray that he and is family become Baptized into Christ.

A conversion from Alawi Islam to Christianity isn't realistic. I wil pray for that, though. It's enough that he keeps Christians safe.

I agree; it is in syria that aramaic christians still live and speak the language of Christ.  And, I certainly respect assad for this position.  But, I knew he held these views long ago.  It is written on the mans face when he visits the christians in his country.   They appear to like him, and he appears to like them.  He seems to be better than the saying "if they are not against you, they are for you".
