Ivermectin is an anthelmintic (kills parasitic worms). Why would it treat COVID-19, which is a virus (SARS-CoV-2)?
The Ivermectin molecule binds to the same ACE2 receptor used by the SARS-CoV-2. The virus uses the ACE2 receptor to attach to cells and inject its viral payload into the cell nucleus. If Ivermectin attaches to the cell prior to the proliferation of the virus, the virus will have trouble replicating throughout the body. This is why it is best to take Ivermectin immediately upon becoming symptomatic (or earlier) and taking a large amount of Ivermectin (up to 3 times the prophylactic dose) to cover as many ACE2 receptors as possible.
