Whooping Cough Natural Remedies?

  • Whooping cough has been going around.  We all are mostly over what we thought was a common cold (but lasted for a couple of weeks) and now our oldest son (5 1/2) has the telltale whooping cough.  (Neither of our younger sons has such a lingering bad cough.)  The oldest son usually seems fine most of the day but it can get bad around meal times and is especially bad at night.

Has anyone here ever had a child with whooping cough and have any suggestions to help with it besides antibiotics?

  • What I went through recently I experienced noticeable benefit from tinctures of pleurisy, bidens pilosa, and extremely small doses of chinese coptis, as well as various immune boosters. Willful suppression of cough helped, but wasn't easy.

The link went to a generic site.  Was there a specific article you meant to share?

I haven't figured out yet how to get our little sons to take bitter medicine...  So, I am not sure that a tincture would work...

We did pull out the humidifier and add essential oils to it last night and that seemed to help a bit.

We are also giving the son who is struggling lots of vitamin c chewables, vitamin d gummies, elderberry syrup, zinc and elderberry chewable tablets, homemade kombucha and warm drinks.

  • Just a suggestion, it is very easy to make your own tinctures, and sometimes you can temper the bitterness by diluting or mixing the medicine with other foods / drinks.

What I have done in the past is find a product aimed at treating what ails you, read the ingredients and use those ingredients in your own home remedy. In this case you want ingredients that are readily available with anti-bacterial / mucus removal properties like this family did. They say they actually also use this as seasoning in their food, I can't imagine that but you could.

Mix roughly equal amounts (by weight or volume) of these five ingredients: garlic, onions, ginger, horseradish, and hot peppers, plus apple cider vinegar. Put it in a blender and blend it all together, pour in into a jar, seal it and put it on a shelf in a dark place for a few weeks and it's ready. The longer it sits, the more potent it gets, just strain it and use it. For the kids, adding a little mint might help - at least it wouldn't hurt lol

In stead of apple cider vinegar, I've made my own tinctures with great results using vodka and I've also used vegetable glycerin, and in a few weeks it's good to go. I've never used apple cider vinegar, but I imagine a few weeks would work as well. BUT, you can also use it right away, it just won't be nearly as potent. When it gets to full strength, the easiest way I found was to put 3 or 4 drops or whatever a few times a day in a few ounces of water, then drink it right down, like a whiskey shot......"a sharp knife cuts the quickest and hurts the least."

  • Boil garlic, ginger, raw honey, lemon or lime to make tea.

Watch out for gummie stuff because they are loaded with sugar.

When I had Covid, I would eat a small amount of horse radish out of the jar.

    Stuborn’s recipe looks good.

"bidens pilosa"?  It sounds too much like Bidens Peℓσѕι.  Does it cure the problem, or make it worse?  And I don't even know what to make of the "Chinese Coptics".

I heard you can make your own gummies and just put in vitamin drops.

  • And chicken noodle soup with fresh extra onion and garlic finely minced helps a lot.

I don't know how it got that name, it's a funny coincidence. Coptis is extremely bitter and powerful. It really does turn hot dry symptoms cool and moist. Putting it in juice can help hide the bitterness.

  • I suggest to get some homeopathy remedies.  And also use colloidal silver.  (also, someone mentioned garlic/honey, which are both natural antiseptics, like silver).  I had this cough a few years ago.  The above helped me more than anything else.

  • Harder to find, and more expensive than it used to be, but my go-to: https://www.chartreuse.fr/en/produit/vegetable-elixir/
Probably best diluted in some juice or tea or honey for the little ones.
Green Chartreuse as a 2nd choice.

  • EarthClinic is a great resource where people share what has worked for their families.

    Natural Remedies for Whooping Cough
Each of the following remedies can be used to encourage one of the above 5 keys.
    Apple Cider Vinegar
A standby for many illnesses, apple cider vinegar helps to alkalize the body. Vinegar tea is the best way to take apple cider vinegar for pertussis. A hot drink soothes coughing. Tea is hydrating. And apple cider vinegar has helpful vitamins and minerals as well.
    Vinegar Tea
    6 ounces hot water
    • 1 Tablespoon raw and organic apple cider vinegar
    • 1 Tablespoon raw honey (except for children under one year)
    • Mix together in a mug and drink as desired.
    Mullein
Mullein leaf is a “go to” herb to sooth a cough and thin mucous. A strong mullein infusion can be consumed liberally all through the day. To make a quart of mullein infusion (strong tea) add ¼ cup loosely packed dried mullein leaves to a quart jar. Pour hot water over the mullein leaves. Allow to steep at least 15 minutes up to several hours. Strain with a coffee filter. (Mullein must be strained well due to the irritating hairs!) Sweeten with honey (except for children under a year old.) Honey has antibacterial and healing properties.
    Vitamin C
As many as 80 years ago vitamin C was observed to be useful in reducing the paroxysm of whooping cough!3
Currently Dr. Suzanne Humphries is a leader in promoting the vitamin C protocol for whooping cough. Anyone dealing with whooping cough would do very well to study her protocol.
Dr. Humphries protocol4 uses high doses of vitamin C in the sodium ascorbate form to help neutralize the toxins released by the pertussis bacteria. She also observes that it helps to keep the mucous thin and easier to cough up.
To follow the protocol, the following amounts of vitamin C are suggested:
Weight in Pounds   Amount of Vitamin C Per Day
    20 pounds                 1,700 - 3,400 mg
    30 pounds                 2,500 - 5,000 mg
    60 pounds                 5,00 10,000 mg
    75 pounds                 6,500 13,000 mg
    100 pounds               8,500 17,000 mg
    125 pounds               10,000 - 20,000 mg

Ideally the dose is divided up and given as many as 10-12 times a day
    Vitamin D
If daily sunshine is possible it is a good way to get some vitamin D. A vitamin D supplement is also helpful to ensure that this needed vitamin is in the body. Pertussis is less common and less severe in the warmer, sunnier months, quite possibly due to better reserves of vitamin D in the body during these seasons.
    Zinc
Zinc is needed for the immune system to work optimally.
    Humidify
Dry air makes a cough more uncomfortable. A humidifier or vaporizer can be used to keep the air comfortable.
    Healing Baths
A warm bath with baking soda can be a comforting and healing distraction for a child with whooping cough. Simply add 1 cup baking soda to a warm bath of water. For an extra steamy and humid bath, fill the tub with hot water from the shower (it will cool some as it has lengthy contact with air on its way to the tub.)

This sounds like what we call "Fire Cider".  We made some last year and have it in store in jars.  I actually forgot we had it because it is high enough in the cupboard that it is above my eye level. 🤣

I managed to get my husband to take it but before but so far haven't managed to get my boys to take any...  😅
