  • Do you think that newborns and infants should be given vitamin supplements?  Apparently, it is recommended that all newborns and infants receive a daily dose of vitamin D ("D-Vi-Sol").  Some recommend a daily dose of vitamins A, C & D ("Tri-Vi-Sol").  Apparently some babies are so nutrient deprived, that it is recommended that they take a solution of nine different vitamins & minerals ("Poly-Vi-Sol").

Apparently the vitamin D recommendation comes from the fact that they say babies shouldn't go out into the sun, where vitamin d is absorbed naturally.

I'm not so sure babies should be given these chemicals.

  • Dolores:  I am glad that you posted this.  It is something to think about.  Everybody wants money and the question of chemicals is very important to consider.  So, what is wrong with the Sun? Hey, that is what strollers are made for! Besides, I do believe that what God has provided it always best!

  • Not a fan of infant vitamins BUT I can see wanting extra D when is there is risk. Maybe your baby is born during flu season and your family won't stay home when they are sick and instead come to visit. Also, that old lady who coughs all over you at mass...
There is some significant research that shows that D is great for preventing flu. Not everyone lives where there is enough sunlight nor are they up and ready to go out after giving birth.

I keep both C and D on hand for all my kids, but I never do those infant vitamins that the recommend at the hospital or pedi office.

  • Breast milk from a healthy mom would supply everything a baby needs.  If supplements are needed Mom should be the one taking them.

In the case of adoption then supplements might be needed but should come from a natural source.
