Not necessarily. We had a tsunami kill about 237,000 people after the Sumatra earthquake.
What's concerning now about La Palma is that there are many different openings coming out in different places ... which suggests a lot of pressure over a wide area. This could lead to a much larger eruption. Today's eruption took everyone by surprised in that it usually takes weeks before the earthquakes swarms turn into an eruption.
For all we know, the entire island could blow up.
Some people have tried to interpret this as the Book of Revelation where a burning mountain went into the sea and killed about 1/3 of the inhabitants. Now, the East Coast of the US is so heavily populated that this could end up being the case. Who knows, right?
In any case, it's worth keeping an eye on.
