  • I'm not sure which forum this should go in ... since the main/general forum is locked down, but I just want to alert our friends on the East Cost of the U.S. that there's likely an impending eruption on La Palma ... one of the Canary islands off Western Africa.  If a chunk of that island were to fall off as a result, it could conceivably lead to a major tsunami off the Eastern cost of the US (and in other places as well).

Good to know.  People on the East Coast don't normally think about the possibility of tsunamis.

  • When?  I have had nightmares about it.

Several years ago, we snuck down the shore for my husband ‘s birthday, we felt earthquake while on the beach.

Our good traditional Catholic friends are down the shore.   May God protect them.

May God bless you and keep you

  • It's anyone's guess.  Currently there has been an earthquake swarm at La Palma, getting more and more shallow, suggesting that magma is working its way up.

IF there's an eruption (it's not certain but appears increasingly likely), depending on how violent, a part of the island could break off, creating a tsunami that would reach the East Coast of the U.S.  It would reportedly take 7-9 hours to make its way across the Atlantic.

So there's a worst-case scenario which could see a 30-meter tsunami hit the East Coast, and others just a few meters.  Nevertheless, even a few-meter one would really hit the US ports hard and would result in even more supply chain problems that they're already engineering for us.

  • Many Catholics in La Palma.  No real refugees will be coming to USA.

  • New York gets wiped off the map by tsunamis in many disaster movies.  There can certainly be serious storm surges on the East coast, ie. Hurricane Sandy.  In the 1938 hurricane, people were washed, in parts of houses across the Great South Bay in NY and Narragansett Bay in Cape Cod, the lucky ones, that is.  New Haven CT had over 300 fatalities in the downtown area, from drowning.  In a recent storm, aftermath of Hurricane Ida, at least 10 New Yorkers drowned as they slept in their basement apartments.
If the entire Ring of Fire were to go up, the East coast would be no more.  In certain cities, that might not be a bad thing!  NYC and Philadelphia could use a good cleaning, and a tsunami could do what Trump couldn’t, drain the swamp!

  • I live on the East Coast. If a tsunami came and killed all of us, I would consider it a mercy.

    Nuclear plants.

They put in huge electric poles to make sure people fry along with gas lines.

Hey, there's a thought.  Maybe I'll come visit you when it's imminent.  ;)

Let’s arrange a picnic in the highest point of of Manhattan, Fort Tryon Park, the Cloisters, Shrine of Mother Cabrini.  We’ ll invite two priests. They can give each other absolution and Communion, then do the same for us.  Then we can enjoy the awesomeness of the wave before going to Heaven!

Oh, wait a minute.  There was this radio preacher who tried this with all his followers in 2011. Everyone but him sold all they owned and gathered in a catering hall to watch the earthquake, tsunami, and fire on satellite live feed as God wiped out the sinners.  The next morning the cops had to be called to prevent his disciples from killing him.  Didn’t work out so well!
    Forget it.  Bad idea!
