  • Hi all:

I was just reading this website on traditional diets around the world.  How much healthier people are and how nutrient deficient out modern western diet is.  This site maybe of some interest to some people here.  I'm not sure is anyone here familiar with this organization? Try out some of there ideas on healthy traditional eating?

    http://www.westonaprice.org/

I don't know how much I can do personally to incorporate some of these ideas into my daily life, since well... I suck at cooking.  But the info on cod-liver oil looks interesting and doable, I think I am going to try and find some locally.  I remember having to eat cod-liver oil as a kid it was horrible!!!  But now as an adult, there are more important things than taste.

I also thought this was interesting on soy based baby formulas:

It is clear that the isoflavones in soy infant formula are well absorbed by the infant. Babies on soy formula were found to have levels of serum estrogens at 13,000 -22,000 times greater than those in infants who had been breast fed or given milk-based formula.9

According to a Swiss report, 100 mg isoflavones taken by adult women provide the estrogenic equivalent of a contraceptive pill.10 This means that 10 mg provides the estrogenic equivalent of a contraceptive pill to a baby of 6 kg. Thus, the average amount taken in by a child on soy-based formula provides the estrogenic equivalent of at least 4 birth control pills. Because babies are more vulnerable than adults to the effects of dietary estrogens, the effects could actually be much greater than that of 4 birth control pills. Hence the statement, "Babies on soy formula receive the estrogenic equivalent of at least 5 birth control pills per day."

    http://www.westonaprice.org/soy-alert/soy-formula-birth-control-pills-for-babies

Wow this can't possibly be good.

Anyways, I hope some people find this site interesting or helpful like I did.

  • Women of Grace, a NO site where I check in for New Age updates condemned it. But I think that Weston Price worths more than the current situation:
in Hungary, there is a campaign for pushing the so-called "junior drinks" on toddlers. They condemn the good old cow milk as being defiencent in some nutrients. Many doctors advise these junior drinks and other substitutes for cow milk for children under 3. They say things that it contains too much iron which is a challenge for the kidney. Our ancestors got cow milk and they didn't have any health problems. Also, cow milk can give extra iron for those children who can't stand peas, liver, etc. instead of giving them pills. Also, a little toddler has teeth to chew food, so there is no need for these "junior drinks". Toddlers need a balanced and healthy diet, not the elimination of milk for these junior drinks. I think that they will be a contributing factor in milk allergies.

  • I had not heard of Weston Price. I've been looking at the website and it is full of great information. It makes me happy to see people promoting bacon and lard over margarine and soy. Finally some sanity!

I'm super excited to try some of their recipes! I was reading the recipe for the red meat stew and it called for red wine or red wine vinegar. I've never heard of that before but it sounds delicious. They also mentioned tying your fresh herbs together with string so you can remove them after its done simmering.

I've been reading the website for about 30 minutes and plan on coming back to it later to explore some more. There's a lot to take in.

Thanks, Luker! Oh and since you think you are bad at cooking, you should practice on their wonderful recipes! Practice makes perfect. ;)

  • hi Jen51, I'm glad you found the information useful.

I will have to save learning to cook for next years project.  My plan this year is to get a little smoker and learn to make my own sausage.  Make better and more delicious use of the bounty of next hunting season!

I would also like to take this opportunity to give a great big  :really-mad2: :really-mad2: :really-mad2: to the Canadian gov't for making it illegal to buy/sell raw and unpasteurized milk.  Thanks for nothing!  :really-mad2:

Awesome! What kind of game will you be making sausage out of? My dad does a lot of that. Deer and elk mainly. He's been gearing up to go on a hog hunt soon so I'm sure he will make quite a bit of sausage out of that. He uses a traeger grill and it works wonderfully for smoking.

Not sure what Canada was thinking, outlawing fresh milk sales. I know many a Canadian who laments it. In the States, fresh milk vending laws depend on the state. In Kansas where I live, it can be sold, but the customer has to come to the farm to purchase it. The law works in my favor for the most part.My mom and I sell fresh goats milk and we have a schedule set up with our customers where they pick up their milk once a week on the same day. We keep a money jar in the shed as well as a refrigerator. It's an honor system, and it works pretty well. This way we don't have to be around when the customer comes and the customer can come whatever time of day they want.

  • There is a great book Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon that follows the Price guidelines.  Our chapel even has an NT group, not very active, but it does exist :)

I render my own lard when we get a pig from a local grower, next I'm going to do tallow.

  • Hi Jen51:

I usually hunt deer, moose and bear here in BC, we actually have more bears now than anything else (250-300,000 + 20,000 grizzlies!!). We hunters (myself included) have been a bit negligent not keeping bears and wolves in check so now we are overrun with them and they are causing problems.  Black bears actually smoke well and you can make fine sausage out of them  :ready-to-eat: also I have heard from many sources that the lard from a fat young bear makes the best pastries!

How do you like keeping goats? I got to try some organic goats milk a little while ago and thought it was pretty good!

You are the second person in a short time to recommend that book. I should just order it.

That's great that you make use of lard. It's far better than vegetable shortening and margarine. How do you make tallow? My dad uses tallow when he makes sausage out of really lean meats.

Huh. I didn't know any of that about bear! Probably because we don't have them down here on the Great Plains and prairies. It's great that the big game is abundant up there. I don't know about Canada, but I know in the States many species were extirpated due to over hunting and poor management after it was settled... Which is why we no longer have black bear here. Managing them to keep populations under control is just as important.

Keeping goats is great. They are much easier to handle than cattle, and they can't hurt you as badly, lol. (Though last year i broke my pinky trying to catch one!)They are easy to feed, and are a great compliment to other livestock. They prefer to eat the forage that cattle and other livestock find unpalatable, like sagebrush and thistles. They are much more affordable than a cow, and one goat can produce enough milk daily to feed a large family plus more. Also, their milk is even more nutritious than milk from a cow. And they're great companions, milk goats. I really enjoy mine.

  • Luker - I am pretty sure you can get raw milk in Canada.  Contact the Weston Price Foundation and they will tell you how, if you are interested.  It is illegal where I live but there are underground ways of getting it. ;)

Here the laws vary by state. I know one health food store that sells it as "pet food" only.
