Healing Cavities (A True “We’ve-Done-It!” Story!)

    June 17, 2013 by Trina

Oh, peoples. I”m about to reveal something to you that has taken me months to work up the nerve to confess.

    Are you ready for this? {I’m not sure I am, but here goes…}

I haven’t used toothpaste in over a year.

Oh my gosh. I can’t believe I just said that out loud. On the internet.

I guess now I have to explain myself, huh?
    Exploring alternate tooth care…

Over a year ago now I started looking into natural tooth care, as part of my goal to make better, more natural choices in each area of my health and my household.

I thought we had been doing good in this area, using a ‘natural’ brand toothpaste. Until I realized that even my natural toothpaste had stuff I realized I wanted to avoid–like sweeteners, fluoride, and glycerin.

It didn’t take long as I looking into natural, holistic approaches to tooth care to realize that what we eat has so much more of an affect on our teeth than the substance we scrub them with, and maybe my search for a ‘safe’ toothpaste was a waste of energy. And then I read about people not using toothpaste at all, and, well, since toothpaste (and the alternatives people talked about using) has always given me the ibby-jibbies, I decided to just quit the habit entirely.

So, I just scrubbed with water. And it seemed to work fine.
What in the world is Oil Pulling?

Later, I heard about oil pulling. It was such a strange term, I didn’t even look into it for a while. Till I realized that the pain and sensitivity I had been experiencing in my teeth off an on for a while might be remedied through this idea. So, I read up on it—it made sense (coconut oil is anti-bacterial, and could pull toxins from your mouth when you swished it in your mouth for 15-20 min.)—and I tried it.

healing cavities with oil pulling--we tried it and it really works!

I posted the above photo on my facebook page and had a lot of friends ask me to report how it worked. So, here’s the report:

I loved how my teeth felt on this new cleansing routine—I felt it reduced plaque and made my teeth stronger. Within a month, all sensitivity I’d ben experiencing in my lower molars was gone.

So, I quit toothpaste, and replaced it with oil pulling, and my teeth have never been healthier.

Now, that’s my story, but I put a ‘we’ in the title, because Jeremy’s got a story, too.
And Then Mr. Holden Tried It…

Several months ago, my husband came up to me and said, “I think I have a cavity.” I looked in his mouth and was mortified. His back wisdom tooth was—I kid you not—green and brown and black and pitted, and definitely did not look healthy. Neither of us had ever had a cavity before, but I was pretty sure this was a case study.

I said, “Honey! You need to start oil pulling right away!”

Well, you know, he kinda looked at me the way I imagine you looked at me when I said I quit toothpaste.

But a week later, he felt a chunk flake off of said tooth, and the next morning he pulled out the coconut oil before breakfast. (They say you should rinse first thing in the am).

He began oil pulling faithfully every morning, as well as taking cod liver oil (upping nutrition was something I read was key to regenerating tooth decay). Within 3 days, he said the pain was gone. And a month later, after oil pulling 5-6 times a week, I looked in his mouth, and his tooth was—are you ready for this? White. White with a bit of yellow, but the black and green and brown were all gone, and the surface of the tooth was smoothing out instead of being pitted.

People, I am not lyin’ here.
Tooth regeneration is possible, and surprisingly simple…

God designed our bodies so incredibly. If we are nourishing our bodies well, He designed them to be able to heal from injury and disease—even our teeth.

I share our stories because the idea of ‘healing your teeth’ is quite foreign to people. But listen to this…

“That tooth decay is caused by nutrient deficiencies and not bacteria has been proven in both animal and laboratory experiments published in books and dental journals…

…If brushing, flossing, massive fluoridation campaigns, and dental surgery were effective in preventing tooth decay, it would not get worse over time. It would stay the same, or get better.”  (Ramien Nagel of CureToothDecay.com)

But that’s not what’s happening, is it? It has become normal to have our teeth rot out of our head, starting not in our 60’s, or 40’s, but as children and even babies.

“What is missing from the ADA’s bacteria theory of cavities is that strong teeth resist acid and bacteria. And when you, the consumer, understand that a strong tooth resists acid indefinitely, then the next logical question is, what makes a tooth strong?” (Ramien Nagel)

The answer, which Ramien details in his ebook (linked below) is good nutrition. And you know what it means when I use that term around here…lots of whole foods, good fat, raw milk, tasty meats and properly prepared grains and veggies. Ramien especially stresses whole, raw milk in the diet and plenty of deeply nourishing fats like butter oil and cod liver oil.

So, gotta a toothache? Wish you had stronger teeth? Don’t despair. You can actually do something other than have them all pulled and getting dentures. (Oh, yay!) Increase your nutrition and try oil pulling!
How to Oil Pull With Coconut Oil

scoop about 2 tsp. of coconut oil out of your jar and pop it in your mouth.
chew or hold the oil in your mouth till it melts and becomes liquid (takes about 30 seconds)
start swishing, pulling the oil back and forth and sideways through all your teeth
swish for 20 min., spitting the oil out (into the trash) when you’re finished

    Why Oil Pulling works:

Your teeth are actually porous, comprised of yards and yards of minute passages (like a sponge) that bring nutrients to the outer enamel when good nutrition is present in your diet…or suck toxins into the teeth when nutrition is lacking. Oil itself has the ability to cut right through plaque to the tooth surface, and coconut oil in particular has rich, anti-bacterial properties. It’s believed that  one of the reasons oil pulling strengthens teeth is that it can help reverse the flow of toxins, pulling bacteria out of the teeth, and becoming a vehicle to dispose of toxins. Also, we’ve found the swishing action can be as effective as flossing, without any damage to gums (yes–I’ve gotten popcorn kernels out with oil pulling!)
Where to get good Coconut Oil:

Any organic, cold-pressed, virgin coconut oil will work for this. If it smells like coconut, that’s a sign that it hasn’t been over-processed and still has all the wonderful things God put in the coconut to begin with! I use or Green Pastures or this brand available right from Amazon. You’re looking for coconut oil that is cold pressed, extra virgin, and organic.

Coincidence?  I have just started brushing with organic coconut oil.  I've never had particularly strong teeth.  In childhood, my dental care consisted of brushing twice a day with Crest, and enduring yearly painful sessions in the dentist's chair.  Preventative dentistry was not practiced, but the man did excellent drill and fill work, even if he didn't believe in anaesthetics of any sort for children.  I have a perfectly good molar filling that dates from 1964!  My gums are in excellent shape since the decay is on top of molars, not on the gumline.  No bleeding, etc.  Still, I have no dental insurance and can't afford it.  I'm hoping this will help.  Thus far, I'm missing only four adult teeth, three impacted wisdom teeth surgically removed in 1980, and one molar adjacent to and rotted by an upper wisdom tooth. An x-ray revealed that God did not give me a wisdom tooth on the lower left!

     :barf:
Here is a caution!  Do not swallow mouthfuls of coconut oil unless you want to cleanse your GI tract as well as your teeth!

I'll keep you posted if it seems to help!

    Please do!

I'm going to try this as well. Might try the black walnut oil first.

I've been keeping a glass of water with a sprinkling of xylitol nearby, though I don't do the whole regimen it seems to have helped. Along with the antacids I take regularly, I don't have the acidic mouth I used to.
    Sincerely,

  •  :whistleblower:Antacids are very harmful to the upper GI tract when taken regularly.  If you use them to brush and spit out, that's okay.  But why the antacids?  There might be an underlying problem with a toxic gut.  For Lent, take a few days and do a GI cleanse, if you're able.

  • We haven't tried oil pulling yet and have been meaning to.
A good friend of ours who is from India says his family do it there, and it works.

Personally we use a "toohwash", really more like a solution of tea tree oil and water and we have been doing so for years, so far no cavities for my children, my 11 year old still has baby teeth (just lost one the other day).
Sometimes if the teeth feel like they could use a bit more cleaning we use All natural Castile Soap.

Our adventures in alternative tooth care products started when a family member got a serious cavity with massive swelling and pain.
Of course they have had so many bad experiences with dentists they refused to go to one.
    So we figured swelling(inflammation) = infection, infection = cavity/wound.
How to get rid of infection?
First clean the wound then treat the wound.
We did so with a daily peroxide+water rinse, followed by a topical application of 1 DROP of essential tea tree oil on the gum line of the affected tooth.
Within a week all was well and we have never had a problem or cavity since - and it has been about 7 years now.

Basically I think that as long as you can find a safe way to clean your teeth and then rinse with a natural antibacterial, then your pretty much better off than commercial toothpaste with deadly fluoride.

BTW - I am never going back to toothpaste, there are so many natural and safe alternatives out there, you should check it out (clove, turmeric, propolis, etc).  God is good, God is great, he provides many ways to help heal ourselves - without outrageous health insurance.

Our pediatrician now applies fluoride as a regular part of each visit unless you decline. So, that hassle isn't limited to the dentist anymore.   :faint:

Do you ever go to the dentist? ...or take your children?

I haven't been in ages since I don't have insurance and don't feel very guilty about that, but I do feel guilty if I don't take my children once a year since they do have the insurance. I'm not sure why, though, as I decline half their services (fluoride, routine xrays) and ignore a good deal of their advice (no, I won't wipe her gums after I nurse baby to sleep).

Yes, they sell fluoridated water by the gallon now in case you are just dying to have more.

As for the dentists, I used to, then I stopped.
It has been two years so far, like pediatric visits, they are more of a hassle than I think they are worth.
After awhile, the idea of being x-rayed 2x a year until they turn 18 bothered me.
If I did not like being x-rayed period, let alone once a year for mammograms like it is recommended, then why subject my children to such.
It's like the vaccines, why bother?
They will just argue with me and I will not give them the opportunity to do so.

     :argue: :dwarf: :boxer:

Just be vigilant with your children's health, pray for wisdom, as we have been for 22 years now, and everything should be fine.
After all if you know your children, you will always have an opportunity to address a situation at the onset of any signs.
Like I tell my children, we try our best but, "Who's in charge? God's in charge!"

  • Swishing coconut oil, or anything, in your mouth for 15-20 minutes everyday? No way. Forget that monotony.

The only way to go is brushing with baking soda (with or without some cinnamon), and some hydrogen peroxide mixed with the baking soda on occasion.

Plus, that article (OP) was way too long considering it was mostly fluff. Such articles are very lame when they talk of unnecessary anecdotes (as a way to just lengthen the article as if it makes it more "credible", instead of just getting to the point.

Swelling could be from an abscess - I would still take them to a dentist even if it has been years.  Something external doesn't treat infected pulp. We use Dr Christopher's tooth & gum care, I follow some of Weston's Price's advice about bone broths but in some ways he was full of it. An abscessed tooth can make a person very sick and even cause death.

Something parents can do is  don't allow children to graze or drink anything but water between meals. If they drink juice or milk have them do it at meal time.

I want to try a  chlorhexidine rinse, I plan to order it from amazon from the UK. I've read good things about it using it short term.

  • I use to make some homemade toothpaste. Coconut oil, baking soda and mint oil. Bitter bitter bitter. Ooohhhhhh it was bitter. Too much baking soda and not enough mint. I brushed for the regular amount of time, definitely not 15 minutes.

  • I floss, then I use plain corn or canola oil, with a little salt.  Then I gargle for 30 seconds with salt water.

The regime seems to prevent soar throat and sinus infection, as well as "sensitive" teeth.  Apparently, toothpaste is too abrasive.  My teeth are not quite as white as toothpaste would get them, but it doesn't seem worth the trouble that comes with it.

Two good tips!  I saw a buddy start to turn strange colors from pulling his own tooth!  Dentist said, he could have died from the infection!

Just water between meals?  Wow, you're tough!  I sweeten beverages with dried fruit and it's always tempting to nibble!   :ready-to-eat:
