Title: Tetanus
Post by: Centroamerica on June 18, 2018, 07:38:22 AM
I really can’t remember the last vaccine I got. Maybe as an EMT 15 years ago or so I had to get those Hep vaccines or something.

So this weekend I was fishing with punch bait, basically ground up chicken liver and blood that reeks like dog crap, and I poked myself with a dirty hook.

Saturday morning I woke up with lock jaw and since then I had a terrible sore throat out of the normal. Some minor sweating last night.

Any chance I have tetanus?

Any reason not to go ahead with getting the tetanus shot?

I’ve got good health insurance but no time to go to the doctor, so I’m really just asking about vaccines here and not looking for medical advice unless someone has some tidbit other than go see a doctor.

.
Normally, I would say you probably don't have tetanus, but your symptoms indicate a possibility.
.
Getting the vaccine within 24 hours of the injury will help prevent against tetanus symptoms, but any later and it won't help for that injury at all.

I recommend that you see a doctor for a proper diagnosis.

My husband's grandpa died of tetanus...I'd go get checked out.  Even if it's not that, the nasty stuff you were working with could give you a bad bacterial infection, at the least!

The last time I got poked with something nasty, I soaked my finger in a hot epsom salt and water solution as soon as I noticed any pain. It worked. However, I had to continue soaking it about every three to four hours for the first three days, or the pain returned.

Maybe this will help (?):

Tetanus, prevention, wound care and vitamin C (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIcz4wpVUzI)

How are you doing?
A little better. I think it’s just some kind of infection that my immune system has to deal with. Been drinking ginger and other immune boosters.
Either way, I’ll get the tetanus vaccine after this but I don’t think it was tetanus. Just some sinusitis or something.

When I was a kid, my Mom almost gave me Tetanus with all the Tetanus shots she got me. That is what our final for life doctor told her. We finally found a good doctor and kept him for the next 40 years, a REALLY good doctor, who became like a family member for the rest of my life. I never forget, he told my mother that Tetanus does not survive in water. All of the cuts that Mom gave me T shots for were from rusty saltwater piers and such. I spent my youth in the saltwater fishing with rod, spear, net, and all other water activities.

People have been getting Tetanus shots for at least 60+ years, very common shot. I have not heard of any problems with the shot other than getting too many and for the wrong reasons (like my Mom did).

Glad to hear you're doing better.

I strongly recommend you research tetanus vaccines before you go ahead & get one.  I don't know if it's even possible anymore to get a single tetanus shot; usually it is combined with diphtheria & pertussis. [ETA:  Td is just tetanus & diphtheria; at least one of those still contains mercury (thimerosal).  I believe Tdap & DTaP are all three.]  Some of them contain aborted fetal cells (e.g. DTaP).  If you're going to get one, at least insist that you get one without the aborted fetal cells.  Do your homework.

The last time my brother had a tetanus shot, he almost died from anaphylaxis.

Was forced to take it for a recent clinical rotation, I could swear it gave me whooping cough. There was an outbreak here in western North Carolina
