  • We always thought that avoiding Teflon would be super-expensive. Turns out, it's only a little bit more expensive than using cheap Wal-mart (Teflon) pans.

We bought these two pans, as an investment in our future health. They both work well and are completely non-stick. But the best part is knowing that no fumes are given off when the pan is used, and that no pieces of Teflon (actually plastic, did you know that?) are flaking off into our food.

This cookware is PTFE- and PFOA-free. It's also supposed to use less energy to cook, though I haven't tested that claim yet.

  • Aluminium, if you cook acidic food in it, can go into your food. Don't cook tomatoes and other acidic things in it. We get enough aluminium in our diets, especially antiperspirant, fluoride toothpaste, foil, and other things that the average person uses. It's not good for you.

Not sure if cooking other food can bring the aluminium into your food either. I would check that out.

  • These have aluminum construction, but the cooking surface is ceramic. I doubt that eliminates the aluminum leaching altogether, but it's not the same as cooking on aluminum.

If you can decipher the chart on this page, I think these pans would fall under "ceramic non-stick aluminum".

Especially when replacing pots and pans anyhow, these seem to be one of the better options.

  • Is there any reason not to rely exclusively on cast iron?

I don't think so. That Mercola link will tell you it's leaching other metals than just iron, but I've certainly not heard the same criticisms you hear about Teflon and aluminum. It gets a bit unwieldy, though, when you use bigger pots to feed more faces.

  • You're still a lot better off using cast iron.

  • Cauldron - that's a word you don't hear too often these days. Good looking and good sounding word, cauldron.

ETA: I use cast iron. The weight doesn't bother me, what with my crushing grip strength.

My wife cooks regularly, and deliciously (another reason for my post-marital weight gain), but we still use teflon along with out cast iron. If I had a couple of extra bucks, I would probably invest in the pans Matt and Jen got.

    Ha ha. That's funny.

Unfortunately, the essential gadget on our counter is made with Teflon.

Haven't seen a replacement for that one yet, but it sure would be nice as we use this thing at least twice a week -- mostly for grilled sandwiches or quesadillas.

  • I was mistakenly given a glass pie pan for Christmas.

I always tell people not to keep glass cookware.

One accident with it shattering due to temperature changes is more than enough.

    Sincerely,
