Can you tell me about raw milk vs pasteurised milk? I've have people tell me you can't drink raw milk, that your body can't process it.
Usually there are those who argue that pasteurization is evil and that bacteria are fake

.
Pasteurization of milk became routine in the U.S. in the early 20th century, mostly to stem the spread of tuberculosis, which could be transmitted to humans if the cow was infected. Brucellosis (bangs disease, undulant fever in humans) was another disease that could be transmitted to humans who drank raw milk from infected cows. Both diseases are largely eradicated in developed countries.
There is nothing wrong with raw milk, humans have been drinking it for thousands of years, I was raised on raw milk from our own cows. At the time cows were typically vaccinated against brucellosis and we received an annual mailer to send in a milk sample for testing for tuberculosis. Milk is a natural media for bacteria and if strict sanitation is not maintained someone could become ill from "dirty" milk, but the effect is usually mild. I imagine that farm kids raised around livestock and drinking raw milk developed a certain immunity.
Then, there are those who argue that pasteurization destroys the "good stuff" in milk, denatures the proteins, and etc., for which there is no scientific evidence. Pasteurization does destroy the heat soluble vitamins in milk (A and D), of which milk isn't a large source anyway. Most commercial bottlers add those vitamins back in.
The primary advantage of pasteurization today is that it extends the shelf life of milk by removing any bacteria which would cause the milk to become rancid. I hope I helped answer your questions.
