  • ‘Going outdoors is what stops every respiratory disease’
A veteran scholar of epidemiology has warned that the ongoing lockdowns throughout the United States and the rest of the world are almost certainly just prolonging the coronavirus outbreak rather than doing anything to truly mitigate it.
Knut Wittkowski, previously the longtime head of the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design at the Rockefeller University in New York City, said in an interview with the Press and the Public Project that the coronavirus could be “exterminated” if we permitted most people to lead normal lives and sheltered the most vulnerable parts of society until the danger had passed.
“[W]hat people are trying to do is flatten the curve. I don’t really know why. But, what happens is if you flatten the curve, you also prolong, to widen it, and it takes more time. And I don’t see a good reason for a respiratory disease to stay in the population longer than necessary,” he said.
“With all respiratory diseases, the only thing that stops the disease is herd immunity. About 80% of the people need to have had contact with the virus, and the majority of them won’t even have recognized that they were infected, or they had very, very mild symptoms, especially if they are children. So, it’s very important to keep the schools open and kids mingling to spread the virus to get herd immunity as fast as possible, and then the elderly people, who should be separated, and the nursing homes should be closed during that time, can come back and meet their children and grandchildren after about 4 weeks when the virus has been exterminated,” he added.

  • He's absolutely right. This whole thing is greatly exaggerated and causing mass hysteria. The vast amount of people will be just fine and should go outside. Priests should, with some limitations for the more vulnerable of us, resume public Mass. It's a cause for alarm in some places and those places can deal with it accordingly. They will. God will provide. The rest of America is fine.

What people have to really worry about is the coming economic fallout from most of the country being jobless. That affects far more people and it's gonna be bad.

I agree, not sure why someone down-voted you. People need to get on with their lives and stop living in unjustified MSM fear mongering, they're only perpetuating the lie by following the measures. I'm even extremely disappointed in the lack of zeal of trad priests, ESPECIALLY during holy week. It's mind blowing to me how little effort they've put in or creativity to give the sacraments to the faithful.

Wrong!  I trust Trump's judgement.  If he thinks we are ready, then by all means lift the lockdown.  But if he decides that it is better to stay locked down, then I won't complain.  He has an excellent track record on these kinds of judgements.

  • Croix/Judith/VO2 Max downvoted me, probably. 20+ banned accounts, people here call him out, so he downvotes them all.

  • Of course, legally it's not Trump's call.  The governors and mayors can still keep us locked down.  But if Trump says we should open up for business, then I will support him.  I just won't deny that there is a virus killing people.  Unlike many of Cathinfo's "intelligentsia".

  • As far as the OP and herd immunity.  It makes sense.  But unfortunately there is a significantly high re-infection rate among those who tested positive.  They are still trying to figure out why that is.  It might be that there are a significant number of false positives.  Which is why the numbers that really need to be watched are the numbers of hospitalizations and deaths.  But the re-infections could also be due to other things too.  We'll see.  China is on the bleeding edge.  They just lifted the lockdown in Hubei so I guess we will know in a few weeks how that works out.

And as far as doing nothing at all goes, we'll see how that strategy plays out in Africa.  They are just now starting to see infections go up and they have little or no infrastructure to deal with it.  And I doubt lockdowns will be very effective there either.  I hope Fauci et al are wrong but if they're right, Africa could be a complete disaster.  But they have plenty of sun there so who knows?

  • Don't forget too that the UK's original response was to ride it out and let the herd immunity build up.  But they quickly pivoted when they saw what was happening in Italy and Spain.  And now the UK is getting hit pretty hard too.  When the government opens up our businesses again, I'm still going to take precautions.  I have to because I live with someone in the high risk category.  But I'm looking forward to going to confession, Mass and receiving communion.

Trump is almost certainly being influenced/threatened by the Deep State and is doing the best he can.  I wouldn't take his public position as necessarily what he really thinks.
