  • I'm feeling a bit better now.

I take advil, albuterol, guaifenesin, hot showers, pop and mineral water, and chicken noodle soup (there's a kind of "throwback" chicken noodle soup you can buy that really provided a great deal of relief, so I could take my brother the airport.)

    Any suggestions?

  • Oh, poor Baby!  I was wondering what happened to you.
The best thing besides the chicken soup is to get some rest, drink lots of hot lemonade (made with real lemons!) & take zinc.
There's also some potent stuff called Buckley's Cough Mixture.  You have to ask for it at Walmart.  We affectionately call it Human Draino because it burns all the way down, has a strong odor & some say it tastes awful (think strong pine needles & eucalyptus & stuff like that)  I rather like the taste, tho.  But it does the job!  Years ago it was all natural ingredients but now they've changed the formula so it isn't quite as strong & I don't like it as well but it still works wonders for coughs & colds.  It's a Canadian company so sometimes hard to find.

  • Vitamins are a good way to both prevent sickness and get over it quicker. Vitamin D3 is one good example, they sell them at certain drug stores.

And, as Thorn said, drinking fluids and getting plenty of rest should help. Hope you are well soon.
Please ignore ALL of my posts. I was naive during my time posting on this forum and didn’t know any better. I retract and deeply regret any and all uncharitable or erroneous statements I ever made here.

  • Tele, Honey is a great soother, and kills bacteria I believe. If I ever feel a sore throat coming on, I take a teaspoon of honey and try to keep it in my throat for as long as I can. I works to stave of progression of the bug that's the cause of the discomfort.

As a preventative, chop a clove of garlic and put in on a spoon, drizzle a teaspoon of honey over the top to help cover the taste, and down the hatch! Garlic is a natural anti-biotic.

You'll soon be  :boxer: ing fit, I hope!

  • Gargling with peroxide helps if you have a lot of gunk in the back of your throat.

  • Thank you for the suggestions.  I went to the doctor today and was prescribed Tamiflu and cheratussin.  The fever broke this afternoon while I was sleeping, I woke up covered in sweat.

  • I'm sorry to hear you are under the weather, Tele. :( It's sounds like you're coming around the corner, though, so that's good. :) For future reference, Nadir had good advice with the honey and garlic. It tastes terrible, though. When all natural remedies fail, I unapologetically resign myself to lots of rest and very little physical exertion. You'll get better much quicker that way.

I just got over something like what you described. For about 4 days I was perfectly miserable. Usually when I see the first symptoms (sore throat, runny nose), I down 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar once in the morning and again in the evening. The taste alone is enough to make me want to pass out momentarily, haha. But often times the next day I wake up symptom free and back to normal, so it's worth it. Swigging some while you are feeling sick can't hurt, either. Vinegar is amazing.

Speaking of garlic, a few days ago a terrible earache accompanied my sickness and I mixed some pureed garlic with some heated olive oil and put it in my ear. It helped a lot.

  • SS is right, taking D3 can be very beneficial. The idea is to strengthen your body's natural defense mechanisms and D3 helps with that greatly. I use to have a very bad cough (possibly asthma related), but it hardly ever comes up after taking some D. Vitamin C is also supposed to be helpful. Some people reccommend taking as much as 10 grams a day when you have the flu.

In regards to being a responsible man, would it be interesting to learn, after six years of accuмulating all the wisdom you could, that you had it right all alon

  • Unfortunately the cough hasn't gone away and the fever came back 103 F today.

So now I'm taking antibiotics.  Hopefully this thing will die down soon.

  • Tele, a fever is the body's natural mechanism for burning out whatever is causing the problem. Coughing - the same. Natural ways of expelling the gremlins. The body is an amazing work of art! Plenty of Vit C, rest and sunshine, and build up that immune system.

And get onto yoghurt to replace some of the good bacteria that the antibiotics will kill off.

  • for a cough I recommend you go to a bodega or a spanish grocery store and get a pack of eucaliptus leaves. Take one of them and brew it in water like tea for @ 30minutes or until the leaf sinks and the water changes color slightly.

  • Honey for cough, ginger for sore throat.  Cut about a 1/4 inch of ginger and put it in your blender (high speed) with a cup of water.  Works everytime.
