  • If you smoke it is anticipated that you will cost your employer some money;
Smoking doesn't just damage smokers and people who spend  time with them. It also hurts the bottom line for companies that employ smokers.
According to a new study from Micah Berman at Ohio State, the average smoking private sector employee costs companies $5,800 more per year than one who has never smoked.

Annual cost estimates ranged from $2,885 to $10,125.

That's a pretty significant chunk of change. According to the study, on average there's about a $517 loss from increased absenteeism, a $462 loss of productivity related to nicotine addiction, a $3,077 loss due to smoke breaks, and $2,056 in extra health care costs.

The researchers were relatively conservative in their estimates, figuring five smoke breaks in an eight hour workday, three of which took place during assigned breaks.

This is a much higher estimate than a CDC study conducted a decade ago, which pegged the number at $3,400.

That's a big cost, particularly for companies with thousands of employees

  • Some places deduct pay for toilet breaks. Women are possibly at a disadvantage on that one.

In France there is a boom in the sale of electronic cigarettes which have no environmental impact so could potentially be used in the office.

The moral significance of which is unclear to me.

  • Smoking is bad for your health. Some people say that that makes it a sin to smoke. What do you think?

Everything that harms the body for no overriding benefit is clearly a sin. Piercings, tattoos, smoking, most cosmetic surgery, etc. The gravity of the sin is the question.

  • Smoking is not a sin. Better men than I on this forum have dealt with this topic ad nauseum.

  • My doctor actually told me long ago that smoking my pipe occasionally is okay because it calms me and can lower my blood pressure. :detective:
"This principle is most certain: The non-Christian cannot in any way be Pope. The reason for this is that he cannot be head of what he is not a member. Now, he who is not a Christian is not a member of the Church, and a manifest heretic is not a Christian, as is clearly taught by St. Cyprian, St. Athanasius, St. Augustine, St. Jerome, and others. Therefore, the manifest heretic cannot be Pope." -- St. Robert Bellarmine

  • Smoking is definitely not a sin.

In fact, the tobacco producers in this country should be held to account. They intentionally add chemicals which are unnecessary. Tobacco has been smoked for millinea. I occasionally smoke naturally grown tobacco. It's harmless.

And don't forget - Pope St. Pius X was a smoker!

This whole anti-smoking is just a form of secular pharaiseeism!

  • What is the source for the accusation claiming  :detective: Pius X was a smoker? I am assuming u are referring to tobacco.
There Is No Such Thing As 'Sede Vacantism'...
nor is there such thing as a 'Feeneyite' or 'Feeneyism'

So to be a saint, I should smoke? We would possibly have had St. Pius X longer with us had he not smoked.

All it tells you is smoking is not a mortal sin in most cases. It's a dirty, unhealthy habit (even if it's simply clean rolled tobacco leaves). It's not benign to smoke anything.

  • Groan!

This subject has been beaten to death. Smoking is not a sin and you don't have to smoke to be a saint. Period.

    Time to move on.

  • Smoking isn't a sin, but it can be a vice.

    I don't smoke anymore, but I chew.

And I have a hookah.  Shisha is good to smoke, and you can get creative with it.  Once I iced coffee and filled the chamber with it, and smoked cappuccino flavored shisha through it.  Delicious.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).
