  • This is a high level conversation...

You are German, so you like sausages.  When I was in Germany people would pick up nasty, enormous sausages from dirty stands on the corner, sausages that looked they were made from pig's guts.  These people love sausages.

What I liked in Germany was the Gluhwein, the hot wine you can walk around and drink in the streets at Christmas; also roasted chestnuts.  I also became accustomed to having "Rotkohl" or red cabbage with my meals.  I miss that.  It is a very homey garnish, that Rotkohl.  I like German cooking, actually, it is true comfort food, like American food on steroids -- a huge hock of pork, mashed potatoes, and cabbage, with a tankard of beer, num nums.

  • Oh, Belloc, how I miss the east coast and walking on the boardwalk - the smell of those Italian Sausages with peppers and onions on a good Italian roll.....maybe a few Zeppoles for dessert....Alas! Where I live now, their idea of good food  is to go to a Chinese take-out establishment. :pop:

  • That is good, an Italian Sausage sandwich, but sausages on their own don't appeal to me that much.

Too bad you don't live near me, there is a place called Rinaldi's that makes a whopper of a sub that is exactly as you describe but with some extra garnishes.  I had another place that I liked even better called Giulano's, it was like being in Naples, but then it got taken over by Mexicans.

wow-drinking on the streets and no police attacking you over it....alcohol, wow-a lot different then the USA, a quasi-everything is evil Calvinism....I was in St. Thomas about 9 months ago, some people walked down street with a beer, openly and were not bums,etc...the effects of Americanization obviously did not fully reach them....

how I wish I could go to a catholic cultured country for a least a week!! a whole different world...reminds me of that Fred whats his name that writes for lew Rockwell, he had a great article about living in Mexico (not sure, might be article I was thinking of):

Not unless they fly me back in a pine box.  So, no, not a chance of moving back east.  If the truth be known, I'm not sure I would want to go back now.  I've been away too long.  But I do miss the food a lot - I'd give almost anything sometimes for a good NYC bagel and slice of pizza.

  • Yes, sausage, onion, and peppers. Make that lots here. Also, brats boiled in beer with sliced onions then booked on the grill. Now, we serve that with saurkraut but you can pass Belloc.
Does anyone make egg an pepper sanwiches? I do on Fridays. Scramble some eggs, a pinch of oregano and parmesan cheese.
Either way I cook the Dago half or the Kraut half I win

  • My mother used to make those egg and pepper sandwiches.   I think I'll try that soon and be sure to have a bottle of TUMS on hand - just in case!

  • Yum! I do prefer other German food like a good Reuben to actual sausage, though.

No one here (except myself) will eat regular potato salad, so I make the German variety regularly.

  • You failed to mention we live only 20 minutes from New Braunfels, where Wurstfest takes place every year.

A bit more about Wurstfest --

We've gone there several times. New Braunfels -- sounds kind of German, doesn't it? Well it is. It's named after Braunfels, Germany.  Very German-settled area, which extends to where we live (near Marion). Indeed, my wife's family is part of that phenomena. Fortunately, my wife's family is a branch of CATHOLIC Germans. There are a bunch of Lutherans around this area, though.

Ironically, we never go to Wurstfest these days, since we have too many young kids to indulge in such "fun" and besides we're trying to conserve money so we can save up for luxuries like a garage. (We have 5 acres of land, but no garage, attic, or basement. Not even a utility room! No storage space of any kind in the house.)

Wurstfest is so famous that tourists actually come here to attend it. That, and Schlitterbahn (a water park).

  • We live in a big German area too; however, for every Catholic church there are three lutheran ones.

Five acres...I'd love five acres and I'd put a big fence up all around it so I'd never have to look at another neighbor again.

  • Speaking of wurst - that reminds me that I haven't had a decent liverwurst sandwich since I left home.
