Title: Redheads
Post by: poche on May 20, 2013, 12:03:22 AM
I’m intrigued by the subtle genetic differences that make all redheads different from 98% of the population. But beyond the fair skin and tendency to freckle, there are a few other interesting skin-related differences that set them apart.

I have also heard, from redheads, that they have more pregnancy complications and more difficult labor and deliveries.

Actually, they just complain about things more.

As an Irish-American, I concur. :laugh1:

I find color genetics fascinating, whether in humans or animals.  It's also very interesting to note how certain genes/alleles are linked to other traits.

I have always wondered what controls the depth of pigment in hair/wool.  Obviously individuals will vary, sometimes tremendously- but I've also noticed changes from year to year that have absolutely nothing to do with the sun- like a ewe of mine that was silvery gray and is now a dark charcoal.  Usually it happens the other way around!

A work colleague had many rounds of radiation and chemo for stage 3 breast cancer.  When her formerly dirty blond hair grew back in, it was much coarser and dark black. This was in 1996 at age 31 .  Now, it mostly remains black, but has distinct stripes of gray.

I've heard of a lot of things being attributed to red hair, but every time I have looked for research on the topic, studies found no measurable difference. Seems to me it's just another one of those things that people like to associate with trouble, like a full moon, or a certain date, etc.
