  • Has anyone gone to physical therapy for any conditions?  What did you think?  Did it work for you?  I'm starting to question its effectiveness.....

  • My wife did it for a little while after an injury, but we thought it was worthless, and they charged an inordinate amount of money for it.

Yes, I have used physiotherapy several times during my life starting when I was 14 years old. And most recently to assist me after a stroke last year and this year after a fall when I sustained three fractures to the pelvis. Physiotherapy is soundly based on the science of the structure and movement of the body.
    .
I don't like it because I have always been a person with little love for physical activity (like sports etc.) but physical activity is essential for the health and physios help you to use your body in the best way. For example lifting heavy objects without injury.
    .
Here we are able to access it free in hospitals with a referral from our doctors (if eligible and most people are).

  • I have had occasion to use physical therapy (PT) and occupational therapy (OT), and a relative has used speech therapy.

I personally found PT to be helpful. The PT person should have background in appropriate exercises and exercise levels for rehabilitation, somewhat like a specialized personal exercise trainer. I am confident it is better than spending the same amount of time doing unfocused exercises.

OT focuses on more specific actions to function in ordinary life, and speech therapy focuses on speech and memory. These may not have as general a value as PT, but you could be surprised by what they might be good for. Speech therapy was prescribed for a relative to retrain swallowing to avoid getting fluids in the lungs.

  • I'm puzzled that  the effectiveness of physiotherapy would be a question... so I guess it must have not what you needed or you had an incompetent therapist.

I think it has helped somewhat over the past 3 months, but progress has been slow, changeable (ie. appears to be making progress, but have setbacks).  I have also been extremely compliant with the home exercise program so that is not a factor.

I have another appointment to see my orthopedist again to make sure he still agrees PT is the way to go or if he thinks there might be something else going on there that requires additional diagnostics and/or a different plan of action.

And did I mention how expensive this is getting?  My copay is $50 per session.  I think I have spent about $600 on PT already.

  • PT has benefits, but it may not be cost effective for your out-of-pocket costs.

Sounds like you're doing one PT session a week, so US$200 a month. Part of what you and your insurance pay for with PT is the equipment you won't (generally) find elsewhere. However, with 3 months of experience you could probably improvise with regular gym equipment. It might just take longer to get the same effect. Some discount gyms cost as little as $10 a month for an individual.

Interesting that you say this because my husband seems to think that what I need is strength training with a personal trainer at a gym.  I will bring this up when I see my doctor later this month (if I'm not better).
