  • My guess is you need a psychologist rather than psychiatrist.  And then if you need meds, psychologists are connected with psychiatrists.

  • Psychiatrists provide treatment typically medication, sometimes therapy, sometimes both. 

    But psychiatry is definitely the medical model, you have x and y symptoms you probably have this disorder, we're going to have you take these medications to control your symptoms and go to therapy to learn new coping skills.

    Psychology is different, and I don't know much about it.
    Hmm.  I am going to go with the priest's suggestion to see a psychiatrist.  It could be that the OP just has a chemical imbalance or is dealing with some anxiety where a medication would be helpful/suffice.  The priest may not think he needs "therapy", but as you say, a psychiatrist can provide both.
