  • Big scam, they are ignorant and make a lot of money from these things.

A person gets crooked teeth due to poor oral posture (caused by improper breathing and a bad (weak/soft) diet (bad swallowing and chewing as well)). Instead of helping the patient by expanding the palate, they instead chose to extract your teeth and move your teeth around to give you a straight smile. There is plenty of evidence from the skulls of natives just a generation ago with perfect jaws and healthily teeth that environmental factors are the cause of bad teeth (diet/posture).

I am kinda annoyed I had my wisdom teeth extracted when I was a  teenager, because it "might have grown crooked". I feel bad for those who had more extractions done to get braces, luckily for me I always enjoyed chomping and whole carrots and apples so I did have some degree of hard foods to promote proper facial growth so my teeth weren't crooked enough for braces.

The only time you should get teeth extracted is if you have a rotten tooth or infection, and you can always get a false tooth replacement.

  • What about wisdom teeth that are horizontally impacted? What do you suggest?
For what doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his own soul? Or what exchange shall a man give for his soul?

If they are actually causing you problem then get them removed. There is a difference between a current problem and a may be a problem.

Of course depending on how bad the problem is it may be possible to fix the growth by fixing the face.

  • My dentist when I was a teenager didn't believe in extractions as long as those teeth were coming in OK. So I didn't get the first one removed till I was already into my 40s. Eventually all four had to come out; apparently with aging there's some bone loss at the rear edges of the jaws.

Weston A. Price wrote that our ancestors with their more nutritious and less processed diets gave birth to babies with sturdier crania in which wisdom teeth weren't later crowded and crooked. I don't know how many of them did manage to take their third molars with them to their graves, but I'm grateful that my peasant forebears gave me this precious legacy of such a thick skull.... :laugh1:
Let nothing disturb you, let nothing frighten you, all things pass away: God never changes. Patience obtains all things. He who has God finds he lacks nothing; God alone suffices. - St. Teresa of Jesus

  • I was just thinking about a year ago that people in old times most likely did not have wisdom teeth extracted so obviously something had to have changed from old times to current times to have that have to be a thing for 90% of the population.  Man were extracted at age 13 so I didn't know any better and just trusted the system and my parents that that is what needed done.  I do wonder how they dealt with it in the past.  This OP offers a little insight so thanks AnthonyPadua.

If you want to learn more I recommend researching orthotropics and 'mewing'. Interesting enough there was a book written in the 1800s on nose breathing and similar issues.

I thought the difference was largely a product of age. My understanding is that palate expanders can be used in children, but not adults. Several of our children have had expanders; none have had extractions.

From what I've seen/read it's still possible to get bone growth even after 25, though it takes years and is very slow. Of course there are extremely methods for faster results but those also have their levels of risk. Children and teenagers see the quickest and best results for the obvious reasons.

Also there are some 'lines' in your skull that don't fuse until your 70s, the palate line is one of them.

Before I got my braces about 45 years ago, my orthodontist told my parents that I needed to have 4 of my regular teeth removed (one in each corner) to make room as the teeth were crowded.

I don't know how much money was made on that decision (which would have been made by a different dentist anyway, so the orthodontist wasn't making a decision for personal gain).  I suspect not all that much money back then given my braces were much cheaper than they are these days as well.  I tend to think that our orthodontist probably made the right call.

Was using an expander even an option back then?  I've never heard of this.  Although extractions aren't fun, they aren't long lasting.  Expansion of the palate sounds absolutely excruciating and long lasting.

  • Palates have gotten smaller with teeth crowding over the past century due to modern diets.

I didn't realize this was a rare thing, but for kids it is neither excruciating nor long lasting (30-60 days depending on circuмstances). The appliance is moved only slightly each day so you actually experience less discomfort than braces which are typically adjusted monthly.

It probably isn't rare.  I'm just not in the know given I don't have kids of my own.
