  • I have read a lot about oil pulling, but how do you get past the feel and taste of the oil?  Just the thought of a tb of oil on my tongue makes me nauseous. :barf:

Yes, I will not disillusion you.
The feel takes quite a bit of getting used to.

My oldest daughter absolutely refused after gagging many times.
Until recently her acne flared up again and so she decided to give it a worthy shot.  And good enough she got past the gagging after about 2 weeks and now her pores are looking much better, and she's happy with the results.
My son who had plaque buildup on some teeth because he refused to brush the appropriate way when he was a lot smaller, is now plaque free.  Mind you the plaque buildup did not cause any cavities in spite of itself.  But always just bothered me the way it just sat there and we could not seem to be rid of it.

    Tip:
Don't try a whole spoonful in the beginning.  Try half or a third, whatever you can handle and build up as you go.

  • I've only just heard of this a couple of times, but can't you use any oil? Like coconut? I can eat that stuff right from the jar.

  • I use coconut oil.  I heard you could use sunflower too.

But do not swallow after pulling!  Spit it out!

  • I'm very squeamish, and gagged the first few times. It's just something you have to get used to (I got used to it a lot sooner than I thought I would). I've noticed I can't do it every day though, as it actually makes my teeth more sensitive if I do. I've gone down to every other day.

    I use coconut oil.

  • A couple drops of peppermint oil and a touch of stevia mixed in with the pulling oil of your choice will do wonders for tolerating the taste. Add a little baking soda too, if you wish, for sparkly whites. Go easy on the baking soda though. It's bitter!!

Now this is something I might be able to do.  Thanks for the idea.

  • .

Because of this thread, I went out and got some coconut oil at Trader Joe's, and tried it.  This stuff is delicious.  It's like candy to me.  If you are what you eat, I'm afraid of becoming a fake Mexican (a Coconut).

I take a small spoon, about 1/2 teaspoon (because I don't want it to disappear so fast) and it starts melting right away.  IT MELTS IN YOUR MOUTH.  I have not been able to figure out how to suppress my salivary glands because within 10 seconds, my mouth is awash with it, and I have to get another spoon of the oil because it's too diluted already, and besides, I can't control myself and keep swallowing it.  The longest I've been able to keep some part of it from being swallowed is no more than one minute.

I knew a guy from England who boasted that his lemon chicken was "so good, it melts in your mouth!"  He was wrong.  His lemon chicken tasted okay, but it sat like a lump in my mouth and did NO MELTING whatsoever.  But maybe that's because he didn't cook it with coconut oil.  HAHAHAHAHA

Seriously, this all-natural wonder is addicting.  I don't know how I could have been so uninformed all these years.  Thanks to you all who passed along this unstoppable idea.  If dental health is a side benefit, all the better.  That's all I have to say.

  • Neil, I sit here as we speak giggling at your above post. I've never heard of anyone loving the taste of it plain!! Lol. But I do think the taste is tolerable as far as oils go.

I love coconut oil. Some might call me a nerd about it. Anyway, now that you love it too, maybe you'll love the info found in this thread. http://www.cathinfo.com/catholic.php?a=topic&t=20384&min=25&num=5

Happy oil pulling! And oil eating. ;)

  • I thought everybody loved coconut oil from the jar!

I've never pulled me any oil but I'm going to do it.  From what I understand, you swish it around for 20 minutes once / day and spit it out.  Is that correct?

  • Yep, just swish it around back and forth and in between your teeth. I can only do it for so long before gagging, hehe. No matter how much mint I add!

  • Pulling coconut oil as we type ...

I'm sort of playing with fire by reading the forum while pulling.  If something strikes my funny bone it could be the end of my computer.  Maybe I should have the spittoon handy.

Hope this will clear up my acne.  Although, at my age, anything that makes me look younger should be counted as a blessing.

Your reaction is perfectly normal.  I'm just guessing, but I think it might be that the oil is supposed to mix with the saliva - otherwise the directions would be to keep using fresh oil.  I didn't have any trouble.  I had the same reaction as you, but after about a minute, I found that there's a limit to how much saliva is produced, and once that limit was reached, I just had to spend the rest of the time with my mouth almost full, trying not to laugh.

And you can swallow without losing anything if you keep the liquid at the front of your mouth, and swallow after closing your throat first, if that makes sense.  It's natural to swallow regularly, and there's no reason you can't while pulling oil.

I laughed out loud.  Good thing I had nothing in my mouth!

MC, that's what I understand -  20 min w/o swallowing (had to work my way up to that).

For those who may have any dental issues (infection), I witnessed a complete healing:  add a few drops of oil of oregano to the coconut oil and "pull" a few times a day.  This person also "pulled" with warm salt water and took some olive leaf extract - and the infection was gone in 2 days.  He continued the protocol for 2 weeks however, as advised, to ensure eradication.

    Gotta love the oil pull.
