(CD (https://www.commondreams.org/news/2019/03/28/verdict-monsanto-found-liable-mans-cancer-ordered-pay-80-million-damages)) – In a victory for consumers and yet another massive blow to Monsanto, a federal jury on Wednesday found the company liable for causing a California man’s cancer and ordered it to pay $80 million in damages.
“The jury resoundingly held Monsanto accountable for its 40 years of corporate malfeasance and sent a message to Monsanto that it needs to change the way it does business,” said the legal team of 70-year-old Edwin Hardeman, who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) in 2015 after using Roundup on his property for more than two decades.
“It is clear from Monsanto’s actions that it does not care whether Roundup causes cancer, focusing instead on manipulating public opinion and undermining anyone who raises genuine and legitimate concerns about Roundup,” Hardeman’s lawyers added.
Earlier this month (https://www.commondreams.org/news/2019/03/20/another-guilty-verdict-monsanto-jury-finds-roundup-was-substantial-factor-causing), the San Francisco jury ruled that Roundup was a “substantial factor” in the development of Hardeman’s cancer.
In its Wednesday ruling, the jury said Monsanto—which was acquired (https://www.commondreams.org/news/2018/06/05/bayer-ditches-monsantos-toxic-name-merger-green-groups-say-theres-no-erasing-its) by German pharmaceutical giant Bayer last year—should be held liable for failing to give sufficient warnings about Roundup’s cancer risks.
“Clearly, the testimony that informed the jury’s decision was Bayer-Monsanto hiding Roundup’s carcinogenic properties, manipulating the science, and cozying up with EPA so it would not have to warn consumers of its dangerous product,” Ken Cook, president of the Environmental Working Group, said in a statement.

“Bayer-Monsanto has known for decades the cancer-causing properties of Roundup, and I applaud the jury for holding the company accountable for failing to warn consumers of the known danger,” Cook added. “This verdict puts Bayer’s back firmly up against the wall as the cost of litigation mounts and its stock price gets pummeled once again.”

The jury found that Monsanto failed to adequately warn the public of the potential dangers of using Roundup. “The jury also heard evidence that the agrochemical giant went so far as to ghostwrite scientific papers, according to court transcripts.” https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/skbaer/hardeman-roundup-cancer-damages … (https://t.co/BhBFzQIeV3)

Monsanto Has Been Ordered To Pay $80 Million After A Jury Found Its Weed Killer Caused A Man’s…
The jury determined the popular weed killer was a “substantial factor” in the development of a California man’s non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Bayer said it is “disappointed” in the jury’s decision and plans to appeal.
The latest ruling against Monsanto comes as the company is facing thousands of similar lawsuits nationwide (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2019/mar/27/monsanto-trial-verdict-cancer-jury).
As Common Dreams reported (https://www.commondreams.org/news/2018/08/10/guilty-all-counts-historic-victory-monsanto-ordered-pay-289-million-roundup-cancer), a jury last year ordered Monsanto to pay over $280 million in damages to school groundskeeper Dewayne Johnson, who said Roundup caused his cancer.
“The evidence is overwhelming that Roundup can cause non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma,” Jennifer Moore, a lawyer for Hardeman, told the New York Times. “Now two different juries have held that Roundup causes an individual’s non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and that Monsanto should be punished for its conduct.”

Last semester, I took an Ecology and Management of Weeds class. The professor showed us the LD 50 rating (lethal dose) of many chemicals. He couldn't stop telling us about how nicotine and alcohol are more poisonous than RoundUp. He harped on this point MULTIPLE times and would instinctively defend Monsanto whenever they were brought up. It almost made think he was sponsored or something. I'm surprised his car wasn't decked out in RoundUp decals.

Back in 1983, I was shopping at a local hardware store, and there was this guy who was giving a product demonstration for Round Up.

He told us that Round Up was so safe that he drank a cup a day and it had no effect on him. I wonder if he is still alive.

Anyway, he poured himself a cup of Round Up and drank it undiluted without a grimace.

How low did Monsanto go?

Monsanto (now Bayer) hires private mercenaries to conduct domestic and foreign operations. They also back shills at universities and Think Tanks.
