  • I have to say I was quite proud of myself for completing a traditional Lenten fast, 2 snacks and then a big meal everyday. Anyhow towards the end of my fast a few people mentioned that I looked thinner. I'm usually 185lbs so maybe I dropped down to 180-182. Then a few weeks ago I got my skipping rope out and jumped rope and I could barely walk for about a week, thought I was just getting old (almost 40) but then I hopped on the scale and I weighed 203lbs!  The only explanation I can think of is that I slowed down my motabolism when I did the fast.

So should I try to burn it off now or wait til next Lent?

  • Huh. That's interesting. I couldn't tell you wether to lose the extra 20 pounds or not, for I know neither your height nor stature. It depends, I suppose.

What if you gain 20 pounds every year? If next year you gain 20 more pounds, I'd say up your jump rope regimens. ;)

  • There was an instant when Padre Pio went on a fast and gained weight.

  • If 185 is your healthy weight then I'd say yes, work to get off that extra.  It only gets harder as you get older so taking if off now is a good idea.

  • Great that you managed the fast!

You may have slowed your metabolism, but more important than weight is lean body mass. If you became relatively inactive with the fasting, then your body will not be burning the fat preferentially but also the protein (muscle mass), so you could have become deconditioned. Don't worry so much about actual weight but what kind of weight you have gained. Without meaning to sound like one of those fitness freaks on the TV, if you exercise you'll at least improve the ratio of muscle to fat and end up more fit.
