Lab vs wild virus

    • I wonder if a virus is the same with regards to contagiousness when it's in a lab, "live," and when it's outside in the air or when someone who is infected sneezes etc.

    Isn't it the same thing? Aren't they both "live"? 

    Because as far as I know, when dealing with "live viruses," scientists of course wear full hazmat suits and the environment is sealed and contained etc. and if someone were to suggest using a plain surgical mask/cloth etc. for "protection," it'd be taken as a joke.

    • It depends on the virus, animals and setting (lab or wild) for serial passage [virus passed from animal(s) to animal(s) and/or animal(s) to human] to be achieved.

    Ferrets are great models because their respiratory system is most similar to humans in terms of virus transmission.

    Exactly.

    Were all those scientists and workers "overdoing it" when wearing those hazmat suits with independent oxygen supply to prevent infection by dangerous viruses? Because according to the "common wisdom" and "fact checkers" today, all you need is a simple surgical mask and you're golden!
