Kidney Stones

  • So...I saw the urologist last week about my kidney stones. I have 1 great big stone and a bunch of small stones in my left kidney. The doctor gave me 3 options. Option 1 is shockwave treatment and I would have to go to Rhode Island to get that done. The doctor said it only has a 50% chance of working. The 2nd option is going through my back with a scope to get the stone out which with my size he says he wouldn't even attempt that.

The third option and the option I am going with is the one the doctor recommended which is a scope inserted through my manhood part and into my kidney. The scope has a laser at the end of it and they break up the stone that way. Then they leave a stent in me so the kidney can drain. Then I would have to go back so they can see if the kidney is drained and if they got the stone broken up and they possibly might have to blast it with a laser again. If they have to do that I would have to go back a third time.

The problem is, the doctor isn't going to do this operation unless I lose 30 pounds. I am about 280 right now and I have to get to 250 by January. The doctor told me to eat nothing but fruits and veggies between now and then and get lots of exercise. I don't think I am going to stick with just fruits and veggies but I am going to try to cut down a lot and now that I have Winston I will have a reason to get out and exercise more!

The doctor also said that no matter what they do they won't be able to get all the stones out of the kidney so I will likely have them all my life. I know a lot of people have said cranberry juice helps to dissolve kidney stones and I do like cranberry juice but I am not too happy about having to deal with these the rest of my life. Lately they have been causing me a lot of pain too and I don't like taking pain killers but one time I have to take some.

  • It's too bad they don't have that shockwave treatment nearer to you.

  • I have suffered much with KS's till I discovered what caused them, at least in my case.
I searched the Internet for the cause and the only one that fit me, was eating too much cashew nuts.  At that time in my life, my husband knowing how I loved them would bring me from Costco the nuts, and I just ate too many.

Since I stopped the nuts, my KS's have disappeared.

Not saying this could be your cause, but I know it was mine.
    Please pray for my soul.

  • I do eat a fair amount of cashews...but I would like to find out what's causing them so at least I can prevent myself from getting more!

  • A health article says:

    Diet

If your kidney stone is caused by an excess of calcium, you may be advised to reduce the amount of oxalates in your diet.

Oxalates prevent calcium being absorbed by your body, and can accuмulate in your kidney to form a stone.

    Foods that contain oxalates include:

        beetroot
        asparagus
        rhubarb
        chocolate
        berries
        leeks
        parsley
        celery
        almonds, peanuts and cashew nuts
        soy products
grains, such as oatmeal, wheat germ and wholewheat

You should not reduce the amount of calcium in your diet unless your GP recommends it. This is because calcium is very important for maintaining healthy bones and teeth.

[It seems there are different types of kidney stones, and this can affect what dietary changes you have to make and medication you might have to take. Some kidney stones can be caused by calcium not being absorbed.]
    Sincerely,

    Shin

  • Drink lots of water.  Being hydrated is important.  Also drink clear broth a couple of times a day.  It helps to control appetite and also hydrates.  Do not drink fruit juice or carbonated beverages, even sugar free ones.

  • Shin, that is probably the same list I read, and the cashew nuts are the only things I ate, and I ate, at that time, lots of them.

Well you have to admit they are pretty good!

They're supposed to be a mood boosting food, like chocolate or fish/flax oil.

Seems like health articles night for me. An hour ago one of my lymph nodes suddenly swelled up like a golf ball, my face now looks lopsided, so now I'm reading up on that.

  • The herb hydrangea will clear up kidney stones.  I suggest Nature's Sunshine or the brand that The Vitamin Shoppe sells.  Double the recommended dose and take them 3 times each day with food.  As bad as yours sound, you'll probably go through 3 or 4 bottles.  After you get cleared up, get a bottle every 2 or 3 months and take it as recommended on the bottle to keep you clear.  After you do this, you will always want to have a couple of bottles on hand (several more than that if you're prepping).

Greasy foods and calcium can also cause stones.

  • Btw--after you get cleared up, you should also drink cranberry juice.  I know cran-grape does not work--grape cancels out the effect of cranberry.  I would suggest pure cranberry juice.

I think it may be risky to do that at this point as the cranberry juice will disturb the stones but not get rid of them effectively (even though it's somewhat effective for prevention).

The hydrangea may cause some pretty extensive pain considering the extent of your stones.  But if you can be tough, it will work.  Basically, the hydrangea grinds them up if I understand the concept correctly.

I recommend investigating into TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine).  My Father-in-law had great results although I cannot recall what tea he was given.  Overall our family has managed to resolve a multitude health issues with Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture (including macular degeneration which drove my mother practically blind and regular doctors had no answer for, she has her vision and has had it for almost 10 years now).

Definitely KS will not be the only issue you will have to deal with at that weight, you definitely have to lose quite a bit.  I know I did when my last pregnancy highlighted several health issues that were very scary.  Since then, I have changed my diet and addressed the issue of inflammation and how my body processes what I place into it. You have some time, try getting a different perspective and opinion.

I just got myself a bottle of the Nature's Sunshine brand. I liked what I saw on the product comments...one commenter said he was supposed to have surgery in 5 days but after taking 2 an hour for 24 hours the stones were dissolved. Other reviewers posted similar positive reviews...in fact I didn't see one negative comment. So I am going to give it a try to see how it works!

  • My husband had them.  They are painful.  He was told that he was getting too much calcium.  He kept drinking water until he passed them.  It is extremely painful.
Me I now have 33 mm gall stone.  And all they talk about is passing me onto surgeon.

We really need traditional Catholics who are prolife in everyday.

May God bless you and keep you
