This is still on my bucket list, to be honest. It's a very important skill to have from a self-sufficiency and preparedness perspective.

My biggest chance is if the neighbor and/or myself stocks one of our large ponds with fish. We each dug ourselves a large pond with a tractor. His is enormous (1+ acres) and has held water for several years -- Mine is considerably smaller, but I'm still trying to make it bigger/deeper/wider and making good progress. One of these years I'll let it stay filled with water, and then I just need to add fish and other aquatic life for a complete aquatic ecosystem. Then I can fish from it.

We don't have a lot of rivers/streams/lakes/ocean around here to fish from, unfortunately. We have 2+ growing seasons (practically year-round) but this is rural Texas. We're not in the desert-y part, but it still ain't Minnesota.

Not to resort to cop-outs, but having a large travel time to/from a fishing spot constitutes a big obstacle for me, which is why it hasn't happened yet.

In short, I'm still working on this one.

P.S. The reason it hasn't been prioritized yet? My dad wasn't a fisherman, and never taught me to fish. "Ah, that explains it!" many of you are thinking to yourselves. The same reason I'm not into sports.

If a young person is hungry enough, he will figure out how to hunt and fish. My dad and his brothers grew up without a dad, but they figured out how to fish in ponds and lakes in Missouri (Ozarks) anyway, because they were often hungry and didn't have enough food. That was in the late 1930's, and 1940's. We may be returning to those days, when we'll have to depend on our own initiative and wits.

To me, fishing was always a recreation rather than a skill to learn, the same for hunting and camping. I can however see where fishing and hunting could be essential skills. As far as craftsmanship, learning to fix everything in your home (including your car, mowers, engines) is essential for boys and men to learn.
