I made butter!!!

  • I've been suffering from terrible insomnia due to my crazy work schedule, so last night I decided to clean out my friend's fridge (who I trade late shift babysitting with) and I found she had a whole container of organic heavy cream (expensive!!) that was reaching the end of its lifespan.

I decided to google and see what I could do with it, and what do you know, I found out how to make butter.  It was a little messy, but I'd say it was a first time success!  It tastes soooo good that I had to make fresh blueberry muffins to put it on.

If anyone is interested, these are the instructions I used: http://www.foodrenegade.com/how-to-make-butter/

Love this website!  I love real butter and never buy the fake stuff, but I think I'm going to see how long it stays fresh and try to keep making my own because it is really yummy.  Butter isn't bad for you either.  :-)  I'd say coconut oil has more health benefits, but it is expensive, and some times you just need butter. :)

So yeah, blueberry muffins, my first batch of homemade butter, and a huge cup of coffee (to help me forget I didn't sleep last night!) on this beautiful and blessed  morning!

...AND I'll share some rise and shine prayer too. :)

Breastplate of St. Patrick morning prayer:

    I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
    Through belief in the Threeness,
    Through confession of the Oneness
    of the Creator of creation.

    I arise today
Through the strength of Christ's birth with His baptism,
Through the strength of His crucifixion with His burial,
Through the strength of His resurrection with His ascension,
Through the strength of His descent for the judgment of doom.

    I arise today
Through the strength of the love of cherubim,
    In the obedience of angels,
    In the service of archangels,
In the hope of resurrection to meet with reward,
    In the prayers of patriarchs,
    In the predictions of prophets,
    In the preaching of apostles,
    In the faith of confessors,
In the innocence of holy virgins,
In the deeds of righteous men.

    I arise today, through
    The strength of heaven,
    The light of the sun,
    The radiance of the moon,
    The splendor of fire,
    The speed of lightning,
    The swiftness of wind,
    The depth of the sea,
    The stability of the earth,
    The firmness of rock.

    I arise today, through
    God's strength to pilot me,
    God's might to uphold me,
    God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
    God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
    God's hand to guard me,
    God's shield to protect me,
    God's host to save me
    From snares of devils,
    From temptation of vices,
From everyone who shall wish me ill,
    afar and near.

    I summon today
All these powers between me and those evils,
Against every cruel and merciless power
that may oppose my body and soul,
    Against incantations of false prophets,
    Against black laws of pagandom,
    Against false laws of heretics,
    Against craft of idolatry,
Against spells of witches and smiths and wizards,
    Against every knowledge that corrupts man's body and soul;
    Christ to shield me today
    Against poison, against burning,
    Against drowning, against wounding,
So that there may come to me an abundance of reward.

    Christ with me,
    Christ before me,
    Christ behind me,
    Christ in me,
    Christ beneath me,
    Christ above me,
    Christ on my right,
    Christ on my left,
    Christ when I lie down,
    Christ when I sit down,
    Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.

I arise today through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
     through belief in the Threeness,
through confession of the Oneness of the Creator of creation.
Salvation is of the Lord. Salvation is of the Lord.
     Salvation is of Christ.
May Thy Salvation, O Lord, be ever with us.

  • God Bless you, as it seems you were (are) filled with The Holy Ghost!  Your post showed me that in a world gone mad, there is someone who is making butter, blueberry muffins, and reading a beautiful poem, written under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost!  God love you and bless you!  Thank You for sharing this wonderful moment in this time and this lovely time in your life.
It reminds me of what someone said to me a long time ago: "The Devil has to make a crashing, banging, loud noise to shake up the world to get attention.  Gods work is sweet, quiet, gentle and enjoyable; just to name a few."

  • My grandmother used to churn butter there is nothing quite like it. I use butter as a sandwich condiment, learned from my German grandfather. You have no idea how good any meat is with butter instead of mayo or mustard, they make some garlicy butter in Germany to smear on steaks and it is amazing.

Okay I'm buttered out for the day, hehe. It was very good on honey oat bread with ham, pickles, and tomatoes.

I did get some freshly picked sweet corn to slather it on, but I'll put that off until tomorrow. :)  It made A LOT but but I obviously left a bunch with my friend and hopefully she will use it up.  Not sure how long it will keep.

I'd be happy to share if I could!  :ready-to-eat:

  • Wow, Penitent!!  You're going to class now too?!  I'm impressed!  Where do you find the time?  What class is it? I mean - what are you learning now?

  • I'm very inspired, PW. Thank you for sharing. Just throwing a question out there, I have a electric ice cream maker, would that work or would it be preferred to use a blender? Just trying to think of another use for a uni-tasker ice cream maker.

  • Thorn: Mater is correct, no real class. Self taught.  I am never going back to school for anything.

wisconsinsheepgirl, that is a great question. I am thinking an ice cream maker might  work pretty good. I thought the blender took a long time, so I was thinking I might try a food processor.  Let me know if you try it!

    guitarplucker, Isn't it awesome?  :)

Thank you for the great idea. :)  I have a book on cheese making, but I haven't really done much with it yet.  I had one batch of too-gooey mozzarella (something went wrong with the curds when I added the rennet) but it tasted pretty good anyway.  It is good to know someone here has experience because I would love to learn the tricks of the trade.

  • Pass on the butter fried brains. ;)

Extra butter= vanilla butter cream frosting on top  of zucchini bars. Nice change up from the typical cream cheese frosting.

The little boy I babysit had this priceless look on his face of complete disbelief that something from my garden made its way into his dessert. :-)
