Use detergent with bleach.  Dissolve completely before placing clothes in washer.

Also line drying in the sun will fade clothes.

Not necessarily.  Certain shades of color are often hard to find, in the clothes you want.  One way to get there is to fade.  Another is to dye.  I agree though, sun sounds like it might be less destructive than bleach.  Still, a little bleaching doesn't really hurt most clothes.  It's the constant bleaching of white work shirts for example, that usually causes clothes to fall apart.  Or some people mistakenly believe that bleach actually gets grease out of dish towels better, than washing them twice, but they just end up destroying their dish towels prematurely    

Clothes have two purposes

cover your nakedness

protect from the weather and other hazards
