  • Wondering if anyone here is into hiking? I'm sort of getting into it now that I've settled into my home here in the mountains. Its nice to recognize the power of our lord expressed in the beauty of the land around us.

  • Yeah. Hiking, pilgrimaging, camping, adventuring. Even in the city I often go for long night-time walks.

  • Great. If you're in nature- do you carry anything for physical protection? I was thinking about a simple, but sturdy, stick.

    What are your thoughts?

  • I carry a fixed-blade knife and a hiking stick. If you're worried about grizzly bears there are plenty of options: bells, mace, sirens, and so on. In these parts there are only black bears (big cowards) so I don't worry about it much. One time I nearly walked into a black bear and he just ran away.

  • Where I am I can't go "hiking" without trespassing on someone's property.
