  • Does anyone make green smoothies?  What are your favorite ingredients?  Do you use a regualr blender?

  • I'm shocked that no one else here makes green smoothies

I have been making them for a few days now.  1/2c water, 1/4 c frozen blueberries, 1/2 banana, 1/4" slice of peeled ginger, and 5 kale leaves.  It tastes wonderful!  I only have an Oster blender but I buzz the mix on speed 10 (out of 12).  Smoothie still has some flecks in it but for a cheap blender it works fine for now.  I may look into a NutriBullet if these become an addiction    :dancing:

  • This sounds good, Marsha.  Will go to the store tomorrow for the bananas & kale & try it.

  • I use a juicer but I really dislike thick drinks, I can barely swallow them, so I prefer juicing.

  • I like green smoothies.   Kale is good with grapes and slice apples.
May God bless you and keep you

  • I'll have to try the grapes and apples.  I use a vegetable juicer too for hard things like carrots, my Oster would not be able to handle carrots, and maybe not even the apples, I might have to use the juicer for those also.

I just planted spinach and lettuce so I'll have my own organic greens in a few
    weeks - yeah!

  • I'm a big fan of green smoothies.  Any fruit or vegetable is fair game. The key to a power packed smoothie, of course, is the greens. Spinach is my green of choice.

The last green smoothie I made had spinach, celery, banana, pineapple, mango and kiwi. Also it had chia seeds in it. Oh and ice.

I really want a vita mix, but they are too pricey, I can't afford one. So I use the ninja blender my uncle bought me and it works well enough. I think any old blender would work.

I've had some awful tasting smoothies, thinking back. The worst was one that my mother made me. Beets, strawberries and banana. Oh it was terrible.

Beets make everything worse. Blech! :barf:

I have a Breville juicer and I have yet to juice vegetables but I do make fruit juices and juices for half juice-half tea concoctions.

  • Oooohhh, half juice half tea concoctions. You can't go wrong there! Any particular recommendations??

Speaking of juicers, I find my long lost juicer the other day that had been missing for over a year!  I was convinced that somehow it got put in the Goodwill pile during my move, and was donated- never to be seen again. But I found it in a cooler that I had put in the basement while unloading and completely forgot. Made my day. To celebrate I bought a bunch of oranges to juice.

Edit: oh, and yes, beets are terrible no matter how they're prepared!!

I have a ton of green tea, so I brewed a big batch, cooled it, without squeezing the packets. I just add whatever I'm juicing. Often it is frozen fruit that needs to be used, those big bags from Costco. I use fruit if it is going to go bad soon, like peaches, pears, or nectarines. I really like lemon and strawberry, sweetend with honey.

I have a five gallon bucket, which is a little over 50 pounds of honey that I got direct from a Beekeeper. It is great in juice and tea. It isn't always necessary, but if the bitter tannins from tea bother you, it is a welcome addition.

I can only eat beets as beet chips. Slice 'me up thin on the mandoline and bake, it is the only way.

  •  :dancing-banana:Beets are good, but not as juice ingredient.  Boiled beets with a little butter, yummy!  What is "wheat grass" good for?  I think I tried it once, long ago, and had to find a restroom in a hurry about ten minutes after downing a nasty glass of the stuff.  Is that the purpose of it?  Anything with kiwis and papaya is tasty.

  • Mabel, they grow in the dirt so you have to wash them very well, boil & then skin them before you do anything with them.  I've never heard anyone else say they taste like dirt & I've never tasted dirt.  The greens are also good - use like spinach.

Frances, I saw some recipes that use beets in juices but I've never tried them, but people that have tasted them saw they're very good.

  • I see a lot of smoothie recipes using beets but have not tried them - yet.  Granulated sugar is made from them so they must be sweet, but they seem to be something folks either love or hate and like so many things have been corrupted by genetic engineering so I'll probably wait until I can grow some for myself.  I've  had the canned slices of beets on burgers - yum.

Green tea - what a great idea.  I think I'll make some into ice cubes and then I could plop them in my smoothie for extra chill.
