BTW, for those that may not know, the prohibition of meat on Friday, is not only for Lent but every Friday of the year.
And before Vatican I, universally Catholics fasted on both Wednesday (in reparation for the Betrayal of Christ) and on Friday (in memory of the crucifixion and death of Christ).

Certain orders, such as the Dominicans have kept these fasts.
