  • “Take short, cold showers

Practice regular, intense exercise. Walk and pray the Rosary.

Get a full night’s sleep (at least 8 hours is recommended)

    Abstain from alcohol.

Abstain from desserts and sweets.  Eat an apple.

Abstain from eating between meals. No snacking.

Abstain from soda or sweet drinks.   Unsweetened ice tea.  And water is the best.

Abstain from television, movies, or televised sports.

Abstain from video games.  Read the Bible and Catholic books.

Abstain from nonessential material purchases. (Think simplicity.)”

Only listen to music that lifts the soul to God.

Only use the computer for work, school, or essential tasks (e.g., paying bills)

Only use mobile devices and internet for essential communications to promote and defend the faith.

Practice fasting days: Wednesdays and Fridays (abstain from meat and only eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal)”.

This should be done everyday by all Catholics.
May God bless you and keep you

  • This is simple, good advice Viva Cristo Rey!
"Some preachers will keep silence about the truth, and others will trample it underfoot and deny it. Sanctity of life will be held in derision even by those who outwardly profess it, for in those days Our Lord Jesus Christ will send them not a true Pastor but a destroyer."  St. Francis of Assisi

  • I especially agree with and recommend the following 3:

Abstain from television, movies, or televised sports
Abstain from video games (it's boring and useless)
Only listen to music that lifts the soul to God (modern music is so disgraceful and ugly)

And I'd strongly recommend this to my wife:
Abstain from nonessential material purchases. (Think simplicity.)

All the other practices are also good, if you could practise all of them, then you'd be a saint.

I'm curious to hear what music lifts the soul to God and how. Is it only Church music? If so, shouldn't that be listened to in Church? Also, is ALL modern music disgraceful and ugly or are there exceptions? Is it possible for anyone to make music that lifts the soul to God in this modern time?

See what you think - does it lift your soul to God?

I've heard better versions, but this one is good, one of my favorites.

  • Your list is generally good but still a little over the topic.  Let's not be stoic catholics!

I agree, it's a good general guideline but there is a reason people have a vocation to the religious life and a vocation to the single/married life. You have to be in the world and not of it. How can you be an example for the faith if you become an ascetic hermit basically?

  • Some of these are great, and some seem a bit strict for non-religious life people..

  • I have to agree that there’s good in the list, but Catholics are not puritans! We can enjoy wine and cigars and desserts - in moderation. That’s practising the virtue of temperance.
Please disregard everything I have said; I have tended to speak before fact checking.

  • If you find these strict, maybe you are making excuses to be of the world.  No one said this was mandatory.

Actually, the laity and clergy being worldly is how we ended up with Vatican II.  This is why so many trads have children and grandchildren to grow up leaving the Catholic Church to marry Moslems and atheists.

Maybe it is strict for you but there are many families who already live this life.

But the problem is that not many people are practicing temperance in regards to wine, pastries and tobacco.  It isn’t being processed and portioned as it was in the past.

  • I’m trying to be less worldly and give more to God.    I understand everyone is on a different levels.

  • You preach abstinence, the Church preaches moderation.  Big difference.

There are not different rules for getting to heaven for religious and non-religious.  Monks drink beer.  Technology is not inherently wrong.  Non-religious music isn't wrong.

The above list is easy to do for anyone that is health conscious and there are many people in other religions that also practice all of these rules, much more of them by far than Catholics that practice it. All of that will not help them to save their souls. I personally can easily practice all of the above because I am very health conscious, but if I do not add the Catholic faith LIVED to it, it was all for naught.
It is better to have a Catholic that LIVES the faith and drinks, smokes, and watches football games, than it is to have (say)  a Buddhist who practices all of the above in the list. There really is nothing morally wrong with smoking, drinking and watching sports (in the case of smoking and drinking it is bad for your health), as long as they don't interfere with LIVING the faith.

  • I didn’t know budists prayed the rosary or read the Bible.  We should fast and pray as Catholics.  Yes, it will help to save souls.

"It was no small thing for Super Bowl to become an adjective for Sunday," says historian Craig Harline, who has written about how professional football became a weekly ritual in America, in "Sunday: A History of the First Day from Babylonia to the Super Bowl" (Random House).
"Now you look at the Super Bowl, and it's this odd combination of religion, strip tease show, and, you know, who knows what else. But certainly it's bigger than football. It's about an American civil religion."
