  • I'm getting tired of swatting them.  The door had to be kept open the other day and the house has been invaded.

I put up fly paper by the trash but it's not catching nearly enough of them.

What will attract flies the best?  Anyone have suggestions?

  • Tele, what you could try is opening a can of beer and adding some sugar or honey to it and see if that works.

My family missed that by about 20 years. We've only been here since 1857.

That's what the people there used to tell us when we moved there.

Even though I have a brother and a sister who were born there, they weren't considered natives.

  • Not sure about house flies (like the big ones), but with fruit flies I have several years of expertise in killing them.

Poor man's fruit fly trap:  Plastic party cup, food-grade plastic baggie, rubber band, apple vinegar, dish soap.

Cut the plastic baggie from corner to corner making a "triangle" and cut the corner to make it into a "cone/funnel". Make with enough overhang so you can place it to cover the plastic party cup and use the rubber band to seal it on. Before this though, pour roughly 3/4" inch deep level of apple vinegar and a drop of dish soap to break the surface tension.
Leave many cups on different areas near the sink, trashcan, etc and watch them collect. EWWW!!

Fruit flies are a cinch.  I use the sticky strips.  Beer is irresistable to them.

The ordinary, agile house fly is another matter.  A good swatter makes it a lot easier.  I caught a lot on a strip one day (because there were so many) but the next day I had much less luck.

  • Fruit flies have to be kept from breeding by pouring bleach down the drains regularly until the infestation is gone.
