  • It's that time of year to stock up on squash & pumpkins. Pretty much all of them, sometimes advertised as "mixed gourds", are edible. Don't eat true gourds which are less often found for sale.

    Some varieties are much better than pie pumpkin, and cost $0.25-1.00 per pound in stead of the usual $1.5-2lb for year round available squash.

    Flat White Boer easily stores for a long time in cool conditions. It's great for pies.

    Pink Pocelain Doll & blue/grey Jarrahdale are also great for pies, and keep a while.

    Mild flavored pumpkins like Cinderella & Peanut Pumpkin or slightly sour squash like some rough orange & green teardrop shaped varieties are good for soup/sauce.

    Lumpy/bumpy greenish grayish squash like Buen Gusto de Horno & Marina di Chioggia are also quite good.

    Fairytale pumpkins are best eaten sooner than later, since the flavor gets unappatizingly bland after a month, though they can store for 9 months or more, while the above varieties except Cinderella may taste best after a couple months.

    With careful handling, check your squash stash weekly for soft spots & mold spots. Relatively fresh squash/pumpkins can self heal if damaged especially if you spread the beads of sap that ooze out evenly over the wound.

  • When I was teaching, every year grades K-2 would go to the Community Farm and petting zoo. Everyone, adults included, got a complimentary pumpkin before leaving. The children’s pumpkins turned into decorations, but mine was eaten. I canned the meat in jars, seasoned it with all-spice, cinnamon, molasses, etc. Come Thanksgiving, all I did was make up some crusts, pour in the pie filling, and there was my contribution to Thanksgiving dinner. The seeds can be roasted with a little olive oil, lightly salted and spiced, popped in a slow oven to dry. They make a tasty snack.
