  • I do.  Lately I am  mostly doing spin (cycle) classes and weight lifting.  I also try to walk when the weather is nice.

  • Not like I should.  Right now I just do dead-lifts and use CoC grippers, and some pushups sometimes.  (I was doing close to 50 at a time not too long ago, not too bad for someone 40 lbs overweight.)

In 2009 I was riding a bicycle on a trail and it was great, I've never been in better shape.  But with occasional bouts of asthma I get out of the routine.  :(

Do you do weight lifting at your home or at a gym? I do my weight lifting at my school's workout room. The only problem is is that the people who are there can be distracting. (I.e. guys venerating their muscles in the mirror, women being half naked and yet having the nerve to say that they are clothed properly (potential occasion of sin as well), guys screaming when lifting weights and giving me unsolicited advice, etc.) I would workout at home, but I don't have any equipment and there isn't really any room to put it, IF my mother would even allow me to have it anywhere in the house anyways (she says my shoulders are getting too broad )

    Tele:

You can do the modified pushups until you build up strength in your pecs. The modified push-ups would be the push-ups that you do on your knees. Some people call them "girl" push-ups, but do what you have to do, honestly.

Also, because weightlifting is anaerobic rather than aerobic, I think that your asthma would not be much of a problem if you were more into it rather than your cardio bike riding. Just a thought.

I have no problem that area.  I weigh 233 or so and don't look too bad, and can do at least 40 pushups right now.  Problem is a couple years I was doing close to 70 at a time, weighed 205, and was riding a bicycle 25 to 35 miles every day.

Still, I'm stronger now, I can deadlift over 400 lbs, and am close to closing the #2 CoC gripper.  (I can close it with my strong hand but not with the correct form).

Those grippers are as good as anything else for developing your arms and chest.  Maybe they wouldn't have the same effect if I didn't deadlift though.

I do most of my training at the gym, but I have an equipment free routine to do at home when I can't make it: squats, push-ups, lunges, tricep dips, front plank and side plank.  By using your own body weight and somewhat higher reps, it's a decent workout.  My trainers says squats are the best exercise and if there is only time for one, do that.

I know what you mean about the way women dress at the gym.  It doesn't affect me to see them, but I still notice it.  It must be difficult for a young man who is trying to be chaste.  I dress modestly myself - not that a middle-aged grandmother is going to be much of a temptation, no matter what I wear.

Squats are the best exercise to put mass on your legs and really get them looking like the works of art that God designed them to be... Not just slabs of meat that are attached to your midsection. If you do the squats in the full range of motion (not just parallel, but going down as far as you can), you will get a great workout with it. You should do the squats with weights, even if you are a granny. You're not going to get "bulky" because you're a woman and such a thing is not naturally possible, and it'll stop you from becoming a floppy piece of meat when you're older that barely manages to lift half of their body weight.

One thing about using your own body weight though, is that it has its limits and you will need to increase the resistance at some point in time, somehow.

Well hey. You're only about 10 (or so) pounds heavier than I am and manage to do more than 150 pounds more than I do on the deadlift (though I'm far from an "experienced" weight lifter)

As for the gripper.. I tried those things and found them to be stupid. (Is it supposed to be easy to close? I don't have any difficulty...) Then again, I wasn't sure of how I was supposed to use them, and no one exactly explained it to me, so oh well. I also don't see how using the gripper would develop anything other than your forearms.

  • I have a cardio-glide which is really cool.  There is no way I get to work out as I used to in years past.  There simply isn't time, and I don't live Downtown anymore so walking for everything isn't happening.  Also, it just isn't safe to go walking all over the way it used to be.

So, it's getting dicey kneeling and getting back up gracefully these days. :geezer:

A standard gripper is pointless.  I have a hard time believing you could close a #2 captains of crush gripper.  A #2 takes 195 lbs of force to close supposedly.

Well, it seems to develop more than forearms.  I have only done deadlifts and grippers (and occasionally pushups) and my chest has gotten as big as when I maxed close to 300 lbs on bench several years ago.

I know the gripper is affecting my whole upper body because I can feel the blood rushing to the whole side of my upper body when I close it.

  • About the deadlift, a 400 lbs deadlift is nothing to write home about, especially for someone my size.  Nevertheless, it does make you a lot stronger, it just requires caution.  If you're young you probably shouldn't be doing it.

From what I've read, most normal men could deadlift 400 lbs with adequate training.  Certainly the laborers of the past became accustomed to lifting loads like that.

Nevertheless, it is a sort of milestone, sort of like lifting 225 on bench press.
