If you only smoke once or twice a week, then it should be easy to hide it (if that's what you wish).

I think that smoking from a pipe is a very different beast to cigarette smoking, but we can't know the ways in which we'll influence our children. No one here is qualified to tell you how to raise your children, but if you have misgivings then raise them to your priest and your spouse.

Back to the topic at hand.

I think hiding things from children is a bad thing.  If you don't want your children to smoke then tell them.  If they ask questions, answer honestly.  If you sneak around, they learn to sneak around.  And always practice prudence.

You don't have to be blatant about it, but if a child finds you be truthful. 

The boy does know I smoke. He was with me when I bought the pipe. It is no secret, but I always smoke it after he goes to bed.

My worries are that he might get interested in the most dangerous kind of smoking (cigarettes) if he sees me smoking the pipe. Considering what some posters have said, it is probably no big deal. I guess it would be the same as worrying that he might become an acoholic because he sees my wife drinking wine occasionally.

My thought is his interest in smoking cigarettes would probably only come from his peers.  If his peers don't smoke, then he probably won't.

That makes sense. His peers don't smoke. They are seven.

I'll keep this in mind as he grows up.
