Do you smoke in front of your children?
« on: June 22, 2025, 09:23:08 PM »
I have been smoking a pipe once or twice a week for about a year. My son knows about it, but he has never seen me smoke it. He is about seven. I fear that, if he sees me smoking, it will somehow influence him to do it in the future. I don't worry about cigar or pipe smoking, but I wouldn't want him to become a cigarette smoker because of me, because, as I see it, this is the real harmful habit.

For you smokers out there, pipe, cigar or cigarette, do you smoke in front of your children? Am I being overzealous?

You have to judge what's best for your children because you know them best.

If you don't want to have any guilt over what they do as a result of your example, then keep on as you are.

If you want to do more than that, then tell them why, according to their age.

If you want to do more still, give it up and then tell them why.

I have wonderful memories of both my grandfathers smoking pipes. I always offered to the clean then, and load the tobacco in them and loved the smell of the smoke in the house.

Pipe smoking isn't a habit, it's a hobby.

If they take up cigarettes, it won't be your fault, it will be from peer pressure at school or later.

Children of smokers are significantly more likely to experiment with cigarettes and become habitual smokers than children of non-smokers.

Instead of smoking a smoky old pipe, why don't you impress your son with a safer hobby, or outdoorsmanship? The Romans weren't chugging away at a smoky old pipe. That's barbarian.

Nicotine is a nuisance anyway. There's no real safe way to administer it and you're better off without it.

In today's age of ubiquitous knowledge about the extremely harmful effects of smoking, a person must be a moron to start smoking. The only people who have an excuse to smoke are those over the age of 60 or 65 since they were deceived by the propaganda of their time that smoking was "good" for them, hence, they started smoking and became addicted to it. Since it's very hard for them to quit after at least of decade of smoking, I can see why they still smoke. Those younger than them had the warnings about smoking, therefore, there is no excuse for them to take up that nasty habit. And if they took it up, they should've done everything to stop it.
