Do you smoke in front of your children?

  • I have been smoking a pipe once or twice a week for about a year. My son knows about it, but he has never seen me smoke it. He is about seven. I fear that, if he sees me smoking, it will somehow influence him to do it in the future. I don't worry about cigar or pipe smoking, but I wouldn't want him to become a cigarette smoker because of me, because, as I see it, this is the real harmful habit.

For you smokers out there, pipe, cigar or cigarette, do you smoke in front of your children? Am I being overzealous?

  • You have to judge what's best for your children because you know them best.

If you don't want to have any guilt over what they do as a result of your example, then keep on as you are.

If you want to do more than that, then tell them why, according to their age.

If you want to do more still, give it up and then tell them why.

I have wonderful memories of both my grandfathers smoking pipes. I always offered to the clean then, and load the tobacco in them and loved the smell of the smoke in the house.

    Pipe smoking isn't a habit, it's a hobby.

If they take up cigarettes, it won't be your fault, it will be from peer pressure at school or later.

Children of smokers are significantly more likely to experiment with cigarettes and become habitual smokers than children of non-smokers.

Instead of smoking a smoky old pipe, why don't you impress your son with a safer hobby, or outdoorsmanship? The Romans weren't chugging away at a smoky old pipe. That's barbarian.

Nicotine is a nuisance anyway. There's no real safe way to administer it and you're better off without it.

  • In today's age of ubiquitous knowledge about the extremely harmful effects of smoking, a person must be a moron to start smoking. The only people who have an excuse to smoke are those over the age of 60 or 65 since they were deceived by the propaganda of their time that smoking was "good" for them, hence, they started smoking and became addicted to it. Since it's very hard for them to quit after at least of decade of smoking, I can see why they still smoke. Those younger than them had the warnings about smoking, therefore, there is no excuse for them to take up that nasty habit. And if they took it up, they should've done everything to stop it.

Is sugar worse than smoking though?

  • Cigarettes, the paper and filters are loaded with chemicals. That's probably what's bad for you. People smoked pipes for centuries and nicotine has many positive benefits.

  • Both my parents were heavy smokers.  Growing up and living in the same house, and being in the same car with them when they smoked was very difficult for me.  The smell was hard to take.  For me, it only detoured from ever smoking myself and doing this to my future children. If I would of taken up smoking for some reason, I would not of blamed them, it would of been my choice but it made not want to !

I also would never take up smoking because of the second hand smoke issue.  It's been proven that it's not healthy to breath in and does harm.  If your living in a house and driving in a car with smokers, it's very difficult to not be exposed. , and to do this your whole life growing up, would more than likely cause some harm to yourself.  In this regard, It could be a sin for parents to smoke around their children.  I once had a priest tell me that smoking could be a sin if it is destroying your lungs and making your body cariogenic, which is cancer causing.  He say's your body is a temple of the Holy Ghost, and you need to do all you can to prevent harm to it because of this.  Smoking harms your body in many ways.  Just something to think about!

  • Smoking is probably not great, but lets talk about eating to the point you are fat/obese....

    Never hear about that one.

  • Gluttony is also a sin.  To over eat and become obese is very harmful to the body and harms the temple of the holy ghost.

True. But I have not had one person give a reason of why they are fat without saying: I have a this/that health problem. Nah you just take in more than you burn.

  • Both of my parents smoked periodically. None of my siblings (6) nor I smoke. I thought it was a a bad habit - everyone has a few. Also, there’s many drugs that cause you to gain weight - almost every heart drug, drugs like steroids for autoimmune diseases, and medications for psychiatric conditions. I have personally am about 40 lbs heavier since beginning some 5 years ago. Like almost 10 lbs/year. I do not eat poorly and try to avoid carbs and snacks. It’s ironic because it’s terrible for my health, but there’s not many options except to get a new heart. Not happening anytime soon.

Obesity is worse than smoking.  With smoking you can totally quit.  With overeating you can change but never completely quit eating, therefore the temptation is always with you.

As for the bad example to children, not only do they see what you're eating but it's there for them to consume also.  With smoking the product is not there for their consumption.

Drive past a high school and look at the young teens.  In my city many, far too many are at least 30-40 pounds overweight.  This didn't come from any medication.
Add in the lack of exercise and these young people are a heart attack waiting to happen.
In my family there have been heavy smokers.  Some died at 87-106 years old.  No heart attacks, cancer etc.  But they were active!!!!
    Must be the genes.

I wish priests would do sermons on gluttony, it's a big problem in the west.
