  • The day of the test.  I fasted.  Appt at 2pm.
Could that affect results.  Family dr wants me to take metaphor on
Then says I have to go to specialist who might put me on several meds including insulin.

To me that is overkill.   Why go to specialist?

May God bless you and keep you

  • And now family dr wants me to come back in 2 weeks.

I'm thinking of holding off the metphormon. Change diet.
Exercise.  For a month.  Go directly to lab. And test myself.
May God bless you and keep you

  • Viva, here's what I think:

yes, beware of overkill. what were the results of your test? You don't say.

Take your time and make your own decisions. You only say what family wants.

I heard recently that increase in rate of diabetes is partly due to change in testing practices and/or change in normal levels.

Yes, change your diet and exercise. Consult a naturopath as well.

  • I would go to the specialist (endocrinologist) because they are usually experts in diabetes. You don't have to agree to the insulin. Metaphormin sometimes helps with fertility too.

  • I recommend trying to get a morning appointment and don't eat breakfast.  It is my understanding that, prior to getting blood tests, they want you to fast.

  • Yes, it is usual for a blood glucose test to be fasting. But 2pm seems unreasonably  late for a fasting blood test. With abnormal results, you will need to follow up with your doctor, even if you do exercise and watch your diet.

Is this the test you had? http://www.medicinenet.com/glucose_tolerance_test/article.htm

  • At our lab they won't even test your blood for glucose if you've fasted more than 10-12 hours because after that your blood sugar goes up to compensate for no food.  So they told me.
I found that to be true another time when I was in the hospital and hadn't eaten for a long time and that one time only my glucose was double.  Never happened again.
I guess that's why my mother, a diabetic had to eat several small meals a day.
Maybe try smaller meals more frequently.

The doctor drew blood from my arm.  The day before I ate dinner at 4pm and then fasted until the next day at 2pm my appt. that was too long.

  • Whenever I have had a blood sugar test, I have fasted from about 9pm and had the test at about 9am. You should only drink water during that time. I wonder how reliable your results are. I would be re-tested.

That seems better.  ( i didn't drink anything)

When I observed my test results, it had me down as a male and my address was incorrect.
It made me question results too.

    Thank you, Nadir.

  • The best video I have ever seen about diabetes is this one:

Actually it's more about good diet, but he claims an 80%
cure rate for people who have diabetes.

It's an interview of Nathan Pritikin by Dr John McDougal.
The Pritikin diet is primarily a vegetarian diet but it does
allow about 2-3 ounces of meat per day.  He puts people
on a diet of rice and vegetables, but limits the meat to 2-3
    ounces per day.

He claims an 80% success rate of "curing" diabetes.  Of
course its not an overnight cure.   It seems the key is
    losing weight.

Most people associate diabetes with SUGAR and become
obsessed with glucose levels.  The other factor is INSULIN.

The Pritikin diet seems increases the body's ability to utilize
insulin and this automatically reduces the glucose level.

I really think taking medication is dangerous.  Better to read
about all the possible side effects in the Physicians Desk
Reference or on a reliable website such as:

    http://www.rxlist.com/
