According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 100 million U.S. adults have diabetes or prediabetes. The number of Americans with prediabetes, which can develop into diabetes, is estimated to be 84 million and most of these folks are not aware they have the disease.
Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of the condition, can be prevented and even reversed, say many experts, with simple lifestyle changes and intervention. “It’s a disease of the fork,” Dr. Joel Fuhrman, author of “The End of Diabetes,” tells Newsmax.
Suzy Cohen, RPh., author of “Diabetes Without Drugs,” adds that “diabetes affects millions of people each year, and some complications are disabling and possibly fatal. Complications such as vision loss, kidney failure, heart disease, and nerve pain are not only disturbing and painful but could be deadly.”
Cohen, aka “America’s Pharmacist,” adds that traditional medication includes those drugs that attempt to correct blood glucose levels, beta-cell function, insulin sensitivity, or inflammatory compounds.
“They can only go so far,” she says, “and may cause nutrient depletion.”
Here are some natural ways to treat type 2 diabetes:

    • Exercise. Walking has been scientifically proven to beat medication in treating and preventing type 2 diabetes, says Dr. Michael Murray, one of the world’s leading authorities on natural medicine. In fact, research shows that for prediabetics, a simple brisk walking program of 150 minutes weekly was associated with a 58% reduced risk of developing diabetes. The Diabetes Prevention Program showed that taking the drug metformin reduced the risk by only 31%.
    • Diet. Murray, the author of “Beat Diabetes Naturally,” says that while exercise is clearly important, changes in diet alone can prevent and reverse type 2 diabetes. He recommends eating a high fiber diet and adding a good high-potency vitamin and mineral formula that includes 200 to 400 mcg of chromium — a key mineral in the proper utilization of insulin.
    • Vitamins. Cohen recommends B Complex vitamins found in leafy greens or in supplements to help treat painful neuropathy in the body. “The B vitamins help form myelin, the protective coating on your nerves,” she explains.
    • Cinnamon. Cohen says that a new meta-analysis that reviews many pieces of scientific analysis concludes that supplementation with cinnamon reduces blood sugar levels significantly.
    • Intermittent fasting. New Zealand researchers found that this type of eating pattern in which you eat within an 8-hour period and then fast for the rest of the day reduced the symptoms of type 2 diabetes.
    • Curcuмin. Another natural way to battle diabetes is by taking the spice curcuмin. An article in FSP Health and Fitness showed data by Biochemistry and Biophysical Research Communications demonstrating that curcuмin, a component of the popular East Asian spice turmeric, is 400 times more powerful than metformin in improving insulin sensitivity and helping to reverse type 2 diabetes. The study also found that the spice helped lower blood sugar levels and was able to reverse many issues related to decreased insulin sensitivity such as vision loss.
    • Acupuncture. Modern-day Chinese medicine often uses acupuncture to improve glucose control, protect the pancreas, improve insulin resistance, and adjust the balance of hormones that affect diabetes, according to Medical News Today. A 2018 study conducted in China confirmed that within three weeks, the use of strategically placed needles did help lower glucose levels, increase insulin levels, and improve glucose tolerance.
    • Eat onions and garlic. Murray adds that eating these foods has been shown to lower blood sugar levels in several studies and help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
