    What does that mean?

You can add your own points but Why cross out hospitality? Hospitality is mandated for us Christians.

By the way, I just noticed this is in the Health/nutrition section.
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

I just view the virtue of charity as absolutely necessary, a sort of greater version hospitality. St. Paul says: "Let all your things be done in charity."

  • If you find these strict, maybe you are making excuses to be of the world.  No one said this was mandatory.

Well, SOME of these practices are necessary to avoid being "of the world", but a few of them are not.  Nobody has objected to the entire list, but only to some of the things on it.

So, for instance, you are not required to fast two days per week not to be "of the world".  Someone might then come up with a counter list and claim that if you don't fast THREE days per week, then you are "of the world".  So if you do hard manual labor for a living and cannot fast twice per week, or even once ... then that person is "of the world"?  As always, these kinds of practices are subject to prudence.  And always under the direction of a good spiritual advisor.  For some people, doing these things can become an occasion of pride, which could in fact be worse than the vice that the practice is trying to combat.  So, you need to understand that everyone is different.  This list should be a list of suggestions that people could pick and choose from under the guidance of a spiritual director.

  • I just view the virtue of charity as absolutely necessary, a sort of greater version hospitality. St. Paul says: "Let all your things be done in charity."
Not only you but the Church teaches the necessity of charity.

But I chose to accent hospitality. Hospitality is an essential component of charity. Viva's list tended to concentrate on negatives - don't do this, don't watch that, abstain from this etcetera.

It tends toward concentration on self. Whereas hospitality is for others. There are dozens of scriptural examples of how we should practice hospitality.

But hospitality is neglected and forgotten in our grasping selfish western world, and that is why I stress hospitality, which is indeed an aspect of charity.

Btw, I admire Viva's gracious response,
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

  • I couldn't agree with you more...
I try to practice this and have my family do so as well...
we don't always accomplish all of it but in general a life of penance is our goal!
