  • I get really chapped lips this time of year, and it never fails that when the first chapped lips of the season come along, last years Chapstick is nowhere to be found. It doesn't work well, anyway. They go back to being chapped within minutes. This year I've been trying some things around the home.

One that works fairly well for me is mixing a teaspoon each of honey and sugar and cream (cream is optional) together, applying it to my toothbrush, and brushing my lips until the dead skin comes off. Then rinse them with hot water. Then for good measure I put coconut oil on them. Extra virgin olive oil works great as well.

The process above does the initial work of removing the bad stuff, but they still need to heal, so it's important to reapply the oil frequently until your lips heal completely.

Castor oil works well too, I hear.

Anybody else have any success with healing chapped lips?

  • Could it be dehydration? Sorri I can't help but the first remedy sounds yummy. Don't know about the castor oil though. I remember that from my childhood. Yuk!

  • Could be dehydration. I admit, I don't drink nearly enough water. It also doesn't help that I have bronchitis and a head cold right now... Colds almost always give me chapped lips. I've been putting coconut oil on them about every 30 minutes for the past couple days and they're almost back to normal now.

Castor oil doesn't sound (or taste) pleasant, I know!!

  •  :cheers:You must stay hydrated and have plenty of vitamin D to get rid of bronchitis.  For chapped lips or any kind of cold sores, I use Bag Balm.  It's an antiseptic ointment originally intended for chafed udders in cows.  You can pay an exorbitant price for a tiny tin at a drug store or go to an at store and get a huge tin for about $10.00.  It tastes nasty, but it surely works!
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

  • I use Aquaphor.  I apply it from the jar.  You only need a little.  It works very well.

  • I agree that regular "Chapstick" doesn't help much. Try Blistex or Carmex.
It would be comparatively easy for us to be holy if only we could always see the character of our neighbours either in soft shade or with the kindly deceits of moonlight upon them. Of course, we are not to grow blind to evil

  • A pawpaw-based cream or balm (papaya).  We have one called STOPITCH which is good for bites and burns.

Sounds like the coconut oil is working though.

  • Although it's not the most natural choice, Eucerin Aquaphor Healing Ointment  works amazingly well for chapped lips.  My wife has a serious problem with chapped lips, so I know Aquaphor works well.
