Title: Building better rat traps to stop typhus and plagues
Post by: Maria Regina on July 25, 2019, 11:06:08 AM
https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2019/07/24/rat-poison-wildlife-death-rat-population-booming-california-cities/

California is tightening the use of poisons used to kill rats in order to save wildlife including mountain lions, raccoons, etc.

Pet owners complain that coyotes are killing their pets, but coyotes are the chief predators of rats and mice. Therefore, measures to kill coyotes are backfiring as the rat population increases in the cities and suburbs where coyotes coexist with humans.

As a result of coyote control and poison discontinuation, the population of rats is increasing across California especially in San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco where the homeless population is also increasing. California takes better care of illegal migrants than the homeless who have lost their jobs, who are mentally ill, or who are on drugs.

Traditional rat traps do not work very well. Please share any rat traps that you have built yourself.
Here in the foothills, we are plagued with mice, voles, and rats.

Here are some suggestions for  building better rat traps:

Get rid of dirty politicians like Nancy Peℓσѕι.  Where are the social justice warriors to help the poor?  They are in DC begging for billions of tax payer money to fund sodomy, abortion and other mortal sin.   End welfare, drugs and sodomy which will end filthy conditions that draw rats and diseases.

People need to work jobs and take care of themselves instead of waiting for government handouts.

Here is an inexpensive and simple rat trap that can be built with a 5 gallon bucket, scrap lumber (ramps), glue gun, grain or crackers to use as bait, bottle caps, cardboard, and a few other things found around the house. Pour two inches of soapy water in the bottom of the bucket. The soapy water helps to kill fleas.

Here is another mouse trap. However, the plank needs to be purchased from Ebay.

This trap is a little expensive at $200.00. However, it works if you live in a rat-infested area where you need to trap seven to 100 rats per night.

The down side is: how do you dispose of all those rats? No solution was given.

This one is not for the faint of heart. Water + electric shock.

I have made and used the roller bucket trap having chicken feed around my barn and it worked great. Rats are very intelligent though and after a few of them bite it the others will learn to avoid it.

These are rats, not mice. That was quite a catch.

Two methods of extermination :--
1)  Attach weights to the cage and submerse it in water for half an hour.
2) Place cage in an enclosed box or bag.  Attached to car exhaust pipe.
Dump out dead rats and dispose of by burial or incineration.
It's a nasty job, but somebody has to do it!

Some trappers suggest disabling the trap periodically, like every week, and letting the rats feed without trapping them for a week.
One week trapping and one week feeding ... repeat

Others suggest making or buying a different trap and feeding them for several days before enabling the trap.
This keeps them off guard and stimulates them to investigate. Setting several traps in different places can fake them out.

Have you tried this?

We filled out city garbage container with water and then submerged the trap for one hour.
Rats are survivors. It worked.

Our city garbage bins do need to be washed out periodically anyway.

Not available in the USA yet.

By placing water in the bucket, mice cannot escape. Once they have drowned, they can be placed outside at night for predators to eat.

If you like to sew, you can assemble your own rolling mice trap.

NOTE: Does not work for rats because they are larger and can use their feet to avoid falling into the bucket.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Wdoj6Rb9z8

In the winter, use a little peanut oil instead of water in the bottom of the bucket to prevent the mice from jumping out and escaping.

After the mice have been caught and have drowned, these mice can be placed outside at night where feral cats, coyotes, possums, skunks, and raccoons can devour them. During the day, hawks and eagles will eat these mice if placed on a log near a stream. This is a much better alternative than placing them in the city garbage bins.

I prefer to use a little detergent in the water so that the fleas will die. Next, the rodents can be rinsed off before being offered to predators.

Since the rodents have not been poisoned, they are safe to feed to predators.

Of course, these mink and dogs must be trained, but mink are natural predators and in the wild, they wreck havoc on rats, muskrats, squirrels, etc.

It's true: a bowl of peanut oil can catch mice.

This rat trap is incredible.

Easy to find parts if you drink lots of soda pop, have a glue gun, and some plastic.

This is the least expensive trap to build. All you would need is a three to five gallon plastic or glass jar, a wooden plank, about two cups of perlite or shredded Styrofoam, some grass seeds or sunflower seeds, and water. The bucket should be clean as scuм probably would allow the rodent to climb out.

A little peanut butter applied to the rim of the jar or bucket would attract more rodents.

Wild rats, especially Norway rats, are much more cautious than mice. They might climb to the top, lick off the peanut butter, and then run away avoiding the trap altogether. We had more success using the Havahart live trap, but those are much more expensive. http://www.havahart.com/store/animal-traps

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EgVKsDYkkg

Norway rats are huge. Adult rats can reach eight inches long or more, not including their tails. I have seen them jump from the bottom of a small five gallon bucket, so you may need to use a large garbage bin either a 15 to 20 gallon bucket or more to trap them. We live in the foothills, so Norway rats are imported from building sites, usually home renovations. Therefore, with these huge rats, the water level in a bucket should be increased to at least ten inches so that if an 8 inch long rat fell in, it would stay in. About two tablespoons of unscented laundry detergent added to the water would break the surface tension so that a rat and its fleas would not survive for very long. In addition, detergent would also make the sides of the bucket slippery and easier to clean.

I think this one is the simplest and best for catching a large amount.

Here is another large capacity trap, which has a similar design, but there is a lid to keep the rats from hopping out.
