Title: Brown sauce at Chinese restaurants
Post by: redcandle77 on September 15, 2012, 08:38:40 AM
Sometimes I go a Chinese restaurant to get shrimp, vegetables and rice on a Friday but they put this brown sauce on it.  I was assured that it is "not meat" but I know there is a bit of a language barrier with them.  Do you know what is in the brown sauce?  Is it something like chicken or beef?

It may be some type of soy or rice based sauce, or oyster paste.

Chinese "brown sauce" is typically made with beef or chicken broth or boullion.

It could be either the "soy/oyster sauce" or maybe there is some meat involved. Do they have "seafood soup" there? It is good.

If there are Vietnamese restaurant around, you can ask for vegetarian menu. Many Vietnamese restaurant have several vegetarian dishes that are quite good.
